II. 2. SIMON DE ST. LIZ, said to be a son of Ranulph the Rich, aNorman, appears to have come to England early in the reign of WilliamII. Presumably in consequence of his mariiage, he became EARL ofHUNTINGDON and NORTHAMPTON after 1086 (for he is not named in DomesdayBook) and in or before 1090, when he witnessed a charter to Bath Abbeyas "Earl Simon." He witnessed another royal charter under the samedesignation a little later. He fought for William in Normandy in 1098,and was taken prisoner by Louis, son of the French King. On theaccession of Henry I in 1100 he witnessed the charter of libertiesissued by the King at his Coronation. He built the Castle ofNorthampton and founded or refounded the Priory of St. Andrew in thattown, and made it dependent on the Cluniac house of LaCharité-sur-Loire; this was probably in the time of William Rufus, butcertainly before 1108, when he granted an ample charter to it inconjunction with Maud his wife. He was a benefactor also to DaventryPriory, and probably built St. Sepulchre's, Northampton, about thistime. He went to Jerusalem cruce signatus, and returned safely, butsetting out again he died on the way at the abovenamed Priory of LaCharité, and was buried there. He married, perhaps as early as 1090when she would be aged about 18, Maud, eldest daughter of Waltheof,EARL OF HUNTINGDON and NORTHAMPTON, by Judith, niece of William I. Hedied, as aforesaid, at La Charité presumably in 1111 or shortlyafterwards. His widow married DAVID I of Scotland. [CP 640-1]

General Notes: Ralph de Mortimer, the presumed son of Roger de Mortimer, accompanyingthe Duke of Normandy in his expedition against England, was one of hisprincipal commanders at the decisive battle of Hastings; and shortlyafter, as the most puissant of the victor's captains, was sent intothe marches of Wales to encounter Edric, Earl of Shrewsbury, who stillresisted the Norman yoke. This nobleman, after much difficulty and along siege in his castle of Wigmore, Mortimer subdued and deliveredinto the king's hands, when, as a reward for his good service, heobtained a grant of all Edric's estates and seated himselfthenceforward at Wigmore. Independently of these great Welshterritorial possessions, Ralph Mortimer enjoyed, by the bounty of hisroyal master, sundry lordships and manors in other parts of the realmwhich he held at the time of the general survey. In the beginning ofRufus' reign, Mortimer took part with Curthose, but he subsequentlychanged sides and, being constituted general of the forces sent byKing Henry I to oppose that prince in Normandy, he totally routed theenemy and brought Curthose prisoner to the king. According to Winston Churchill in "A History of the English SpeakingPeople", the Montgomeries (a very great house of Norman England) sidedwith Robert, Duke of Normandy, against his brother Henry I, in the warof succession after William Rufus, William The Conqueror's designatedheir for England was killed in a hunting accident [in which Henry Iwas involved--some think more than an "accident"]. Henry I destroyedthe power of the Montgomeries starting in September, 1100. Hecaptured Robert in Normandy in the battle at Tinchebrai and combinedEngland and Normandy again.

EARLDOM OF HUNTINGDON
I. 1. WALTHEOF, son of SIWARD, EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND, by Ælfled, daughter of ALDRED of Bernicia, became EARL OF HUNTINGDON and EARL OFNORTHAMPTON when Tostig was banished in October 1065. He is not knownto have opposed the Conqueror in 1066, but was taken to Normandy thefollowing year. In 1069 he joined the Danes in their descent onYorkshire, distinguishing himself in the attack on the city of York. When the Danes left England he submitted himself to William, inJanuary 1070, and was restored to his Earldom, and to his father'sEarldom of Northumberland in 1072. While attending the wedding ofRalph de Gael, Earl of Norfolk, at Exning in the spring or summer of1075, he was enticed to join the conspiracy of the Earls of Norfolkand Hereford to seize England for themselves. He quickly repented, andby Lanfranc's advice went to Normandy and asked pardon of
the King, who treated the matter lightly at the time; but at ChristmasWaltheof was brought to trial at Westmminster, his wife Judith being awitness. He was imprisoned at Winchester, where on the resumption ofthe trial in May he was condemned and beheaded on St. Giles's Hill, 31May 1076, and hastily buried . He married, in 1070, Judith, daughterof Lambert, COUNT OF LENS, by Adelaide or Adeliz, sister of theConqueror. He died as aforesaid, 31 May 1076, and a fortnight laterthe Abbot
Ulfketel, at Judith's request and by the King's permission, removedhis body to Crowland, where it was honourably entombed.(g) His widow, who as "Judith the Countess" is recorded in Domesday Book to have heldestates in many counties in 1086, most of them apparently gifts fromthe King, her uncle, held Huntingdon in dower. She founded the Nunneryof Elstow, near Bedford. [CP 6:638-40]
[g] Many miracles are recorded, for Waltheof was by many regarded as asaint. An epitaph was written for the tomb by Orderic. Other epitaphsare in the Vita. He is described as strong in person and of greatrepute as a warrior, pious had learnt the psalter in his youth, wasliberal to the clergy and the poor, and a benefactor in particular toJarrow and Crowland. To the former he gave Tynemouth. The chief stainon his memory is his part in a family bloodfeud, for he ordered themurder of the sons of one Carl, who had killed Earl Ealdrcd,Walthcof's grandfather.

1738688147. Judith* de Lens, daughter of Lambert de Boulogne Count of Lens and Adelaide de Normandy, was born about 1054 in Lens, Artois, France and died after 1086.
General Notes: Waltheof (died 1076), Earl of Northumberland's wife was Judith (butnot "of Normandy"). Judith was daughter of Count Lambert of Lens, byhis wife, Adelais (or Alice) of Normandy, half sister of King Williamthe Conqueror of England, she being the daughter of Robert, Duke ofNormandy, but not by his
mistress, Herleve.
Some people such as Col. Hansen have tried to make Judith, wife ofWaltheof, the daughter of her mother's first marriage to Enguerrand,Count of Ponthieu. However, there is an ancient cartulary whichconcerns the Scottish royal family and in that source Judith isspecifically called the daughter of Lambert of Lens. This documentseems to have escaped the attention of everyone, including Col. Hansenas well as the historians, Morton and Muntz, on whom he heavilydepended on. Although Hansen and the others have doubted Lambert'sexistence, a cursory glance at the documents of this period shows thatCount Lambert was very much a real person. Prior to his early death,he occurs in more than one document in the company of his olderbrother, the Count of Boulogne. So Count Lambert did exist and he isthe individual who the Scottish royal family identified as Judith'sfather.

The first mention of this family is in a render made by King Henry Iof the lordship of Dice, in Norfolk (whether in requital of services,or as an inheritance, the record saith not) to Richard de Lucie, whowas governor of Falais, in Normandy, temp. King Stephen, and defendedthat place with great valour when besieged by Geoffrey, Earl of Anjou, for which heroic conduct he had a grant of lands in the county ofEssex with the services of divers persons, to hold by ten knights'fees. In the subsequent contest between Stephen and the Empress Maud,he remained steady in his allegiance to the former and obtained avictory of some importance near Wallingford Castle. Upon theadjustment of the dispute, the Tower of London and the castle ofWinchester were, by the advice of the whole clergy, placed in thehands of this feudal lord, he binding himself by solemn oath and thehostage of his son to deliver them up on the death of King Stephen toKing Henry, which, being eventually fulfilled, Richard de Lucy wasconstituted sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in the 2nd of Henry II,A.D. 1156, and in three years afterwards, being with the king inNormandy, he was despatched to England to procure the election ofThomas à Becket, then lord chancellor, to the archiepiscopal see ofCanterbury, vacant by the death of Theobald, Abbot of Becco. Soonafter that he was appointed to the high office of Justice of England. In the 12th of this reign [1166], upon the aid then assessed formarrying the king's dau., he certified his knights' fees (lying in thecos. of Kent, Suffolk, and Norfolk) de veteri feoffamento, to be innumber seven, and that his ancestors performed the service of CastleGuard at Dover, for the same, as also that he held on knight's feemore, de nova feoffamento, in the co. Devon.
About this time Becket, having fled into Normandy from the power ofKing Henry, came to Wiceliac to celebrate the feast of the ascension, and observing several persons of distinction present, amongst whom wasthis Richard de Lucie, he ascended the pulpit and there, with lightedcandles, pronounced the sentence of excommunication against them allas public incendiaries betwixt the king and himself, but being neitherconvicted nor called to answer, they appealed and entered the church.Soon after this (13th Henry II) during a temporary absence of the kingbeyond sea, de Lucie was constituted Lieutenant of England, and againin 1173, when the Earl of Leicester and others having reared thestandard of rebellion in behalf of Prince Henry, he besieged, inconjunction with Reginald, Earl of Cornwall, the town of Leicesterand, having reduced it, demolished its walls and laid it in ashes.
In 1178, he founded the priory of Westwode in the diocese of Rochesterin honour of St. Thomas, of Canterbury, the martyr, and began, aboutthe same time, the foundation of the priory of Lesnes, in Kent, whichhe munificently endowed. In this priory he subsequently assumed thehabit of a canon regular and departing this life soon after (about22nd Henry II) [1176], and was buried in the chapter-house there.

RALPH DE TOENI III, styled more usually DE CONCHES, son and heir, byGodeheut, was born probably about 1025-30. He was banner-bearer of theNormans. In 1050 he was at the Duke's Court. In 1054 he took part inWilliam's victory over the French at Mortemer and was sent by the Duketo alarm the King of France with the news. About 1060 Ralph, Hugh deGrandmesnil and Ernald d'Echauffour were deprived of their inheritanceby the Duke and banished. In revenge Ernald and Ralph made incursionsinto Normandy and burnt the town of St. Evroul; but in 1063 they wererecalled and their lands were restored. Ralph was one of the noblessummoned to a council when the Duke heard of the death of Edward theConfessor and the coronation of Harold; and he took part in theinvasion of England and fought at the Battle of Hastings. At some timebetween the battle and the Domesday survey in 1086 the Conqueror gavehim estates in the counties of Berks, Essex, Gloucester, Hereford,Herts, Norfolk and Worcester, with the castle of Clifford, co.Hereford, which had been built on waste land by William FitzOsbern,1st Earl of Hereford; but his caput baroniae was at Flamstead, Herts. Before 30 November 1074 he assented to the Bishop of Bayeux's purchaseof land from his tenant Herbert de Agnellis. About 1078 he supportedRobert Courtheuse against the King. Probably about 1080 he went on apilgrimage to Spain; and on his safe return, as he had promised, hemade gifts to the abbey of St. Evroul, in recompense for having helpedErnald d'Echauffour to burn the town. In 1081 he was with the King atWinchester. After William's death in 1087 he was one of the Normannobles who expelled the royal garrisons from their castles. Gislebert, surnamed Crispin, Earl of Brion, in Normandy, whose eldestson [was] Richard FitzGilbert. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant and ExtinctPeerages, Burke's Peerage, London, 1883, p. 118, Clare, Lords ofClare, Earls of Hertford, Earls of Gloucester]
Succeeded his father at Brionne as well as at Eu, but he soonquarrelled with his uncle Count Richard II, and was deprived of hispatrimony. He afterwards however regained his position, and in thereign of Count Robert was in high favour at Court, when the Castle ofBrionne was restored to him ; but the County of Eu had been in themeanwhile given away by Count Richard II. to another member of thefarnily, and neither Gilbert nor his descendants ever recoveredpossession of Eu. Gilbert was selected in 1035, when Count Robert wasstarting for the Holy Land, to be one of the guardians of the youngCount William, and for the next five years he was one of the mostpowerful nobles in Normandy. His duty to his ward was not unfaithfullydischarged, but he abused his position to plunder the orphan heirs ofhis neighbour the Sieur de Montreuil, and in revenge they cruellymurdered him in 1040, as he was riding peaceably on his mule nearEchaufré "expecting no evil." His cruel death caused his faults to beforgotten, and King William retained to the last a kindly recollectionof his guardian, for when the king on his death-bed was recounting the"horrors of his early life, he mentions Count Gilbert "the father ofhis country " amongst the pillars the State who were perfidiouslymurdered by his enemies.
Count Gilbert probably married a relation of the Count of Flanders, for his infant sons Richard and Baldwin were taken after his death tothat country, and were brought upunder the protection of CountBaldwin. They returned to their native country when William ofNormandy married Matilda of Flanders, and by Count Baldwin'sintercession were re-instated in as much of their father's fief as hadnot been otherwise disposed of. Richard now obtained the fiefs ofBienfaite and Orbec, and after the conquest of England receivedTunbridge Castle in Kent as compensation for his hereditary claims tothe Castle of Brionne. At the same time Meules and Sap were given toBaldwin for his share, and he was allowed to marry the Cousin of hisSovereign. His wife Albreda was a grand-daughter of Count Richard II,and was [I expect] a sister of Guy of Burgundy the rebel Constable ofBrionne Castle, who was exiled from Normandy in 1050. Richard andBaldwin were afterwards conspicuous in the conquest of England, andwere not forgotten in the division of the spoil. They both foundedpowerful families, for Richard was the ancestor of the great house ofClare, while it was reckoned amongst the honours of the Courtenays inlater times, that they descended through females from Baldwin fitzCount Gilbert the Domesday Sheriff of Devon.
Murdered by the sons of Giroie.

Count of Longueville, who assumed the name of Gyffarde (cf. OrdericusVitalis). Called Walter Giffard the Elder in the histories ofOrdericus Vitalis and William of Jumieges. In 1035 he was a companionof his brother-in-law, Hugh de Gournay, in the abortive attempt ofEdward, son of King Ethelred, to recover the crown of England. Hegained renown in the armies of Duke William (the Conqueror), in thewar between Normandy and France, and in 1053 he was left by DukeWilliam in command of the forces blockading the castle of Arques. WhenDuke William invaded England (1066), Walter Gyffarde, thenwell-advanced in years, furnished 30 vessels and 100 men at arms.

"Walter Giffard "the elder," as he is styled in the chronicles ofOrderic Vitalis nad William de Jumieges, flourished between the years1035 and 1084. The story of his relationship to the Ducal House ofNormandy is told by the latter historian, who relates how the EarlRichard, being lodged in the house of one of his foresters during ahunting expedition, was so struck with the beauty of the forester'swife, he ordered her to be conducted at night to his chamber. Theforester sadly recounted these orders to his wife, who, being avirtuous woman, consoled him by saying that she would put in her placeher sister Gunnora, who was younger and much better looking thanherself. This was done, and the Duke, after he was informed of thedeception passed upon him, was rejoiced to find that he had notcommitted so great a sin. Gunnora afterwards lived with him for manyyears as his mistress, until, wishing to promote Robert, one his sonsby her, to the Archbishopric of Rouen, the Earl was informed that thecanonical laws would not permit an illegimate son to be consecrated, and for that reason he married Gunnora according to Christian rites, and in this way legitimated all his offsrping by her.
"The story "*si non e vero e ben trovato*," but it bears too close aresemblance to a well-known scriptural incident, and was probablyinvented by the monks to embellish the reputation of Gunnora after shehad become Duchess of Normandy. Like our own Queen ElizabethWoodville, in somewhat similar circumstances, Gunnora had a bevy ofyounger sisters whom she promoted by marrying them to the Duke, and inthis way the third sister, Avelina, was given in marriage to Osbern deBolebec, Lord of Longueville, by whom she had Walter Giffard thefirst, and Godfrey, father of William d'Arques.
"Walter married one of the daughters of Girard Flatel or Fleitel, andhad issue Walter Giffard the second and several daughters, one ofwhom, Rohais, married Richard, the son of Earl Gilbert (de Brionne)[footnote: *Histoire des Normands*, by William of Jumieèges, chapters36 and 37. The reader will note the origin of the names of Osbern andGerard afterwards borne by the Giffards. Gunnora is the Danish Gunnor, from which is derived Guinevra, Guinevere, and finally Genevieve."].As Duke Richard died in 996, even allowing for the fact that Osbern deBolebec was a mere youth at the date of his marriage with Avelina,Walter Giffard the first must have been far advanced in life at thedate of the conquest of England in 1066, and this agrees with all wehave been told of him from other sources. He first appears in 1035, asa companion of his brother-in-law, Hugh de Gournay, in the abortiveattempt of Edward, son of King Ethelred, to recover the crown ofEngland. [Planche''s *Conqueror and his Companions*, Vol. I, p.
63.]He is next heard of in 1053, when he was left by Duke William incommand of the forces blockading the Castle of Arques. For theinvasion of England he found thirty vessels and a hundred men-at-arms,and Wace informs us in his *Roman de Rou* that previous to the battleRaoul de
Conches, the hereditary standard bearer of Normandy, having asked tobe quit of the service that he might fight with greater freedom, theDuke called to him Walter Giffard and desired him to bear thegonfanon. Walter prayed to be excused on the ground that he was tooold and feeble. "For the mercy of God, Sire," said the old knight,"look upon my white and bald head. My strength is impaired, and I amshort of breath." Whereupon the Duke excused him. Orderic Vitalisnames Gauthier Giffard amongs the Conqueror's companions of mostmilitary reputation, and in another part of his chronicle states that"Gauthier surnomme' Giffard eut en partage le Comte' de Buckingham,"at the same time as William de Warenne and Ralph de Guader receivedthe Earldoms of Surrey and Norfolk." He was chosen king of England by the Londoners onhis father's death, April, 1016, while Canute was elected atSouthampton by the Witan. Edmund hastily levied an army in the west, defeated Canute twice, raised the siege of London, and again routedthe Danes. Levying a fresh army, he defeated them at Otford, his lastvictory. At Ashingdon in Essex, after a desperate fight, he wasrouted. By compromise with Canute, the latter retained Mercia andNorthumbria, Edmund all the south and the headship, the survivor tosucceed to the whole. A few weeks later Edmund died, in 1016, andCanute became King of England without a rival.
