William Malet, Lord Malet, a Norman baron, one of the generals andcompanions of William the Conqueror, said to have been the brother ofKing Harold's wife, and to have been entrusted with the guard ofHarold's body after he had been slain on the battlefield. After theconquest he was made Governor of York Castle and was slain in itsdefense about 1071. He married Hesila (Esilia) Crispin, daughter ofGilbert Crispin I, baron of Tillieres. She probably married (2) Aluredde Lincoln, a great Domesday baron who attended Duke William on hisexpedition to England in 1066 (See Crispin and Macary, "Falaise Roll",Appendix 20, pg. 156-160).

Note: Malet is a dimunitive of "Mal" meaning evil.
The Peytons, Camden observes, have had a common progenitor with theUffords, who became Earls of Suffolk, the founder of both beingWilliam Mallet, a Norman baron, who was sheriff of Yorkshire in the3rd of William I, and obtained grants of sundry lordships and manorsfrom the crown, amongst which were Sibton and Peyton Hall, which hepossessed at the time of the survey. "Iselham," says the same author,"formerly belonged to the Bernards, which came to the family of thePeytons by marriage, which knightly family of Peyton flowed out of thesame male stock whence the Uffords, Earls of Suffolk, descended;albeit they assumed the surname of Peyton, according to the use ofthat age, from their manor of Peyton Hall, in Boxford, in the countyof Suffolk." [John Burke & John Bernard Burke, Extinct and DormantBaronetcies of England, Ireland, and Scotland, Second Edition, Scott,Webster, & Geary, London, 1841, p. 408, Peyton, of Isleham]
Note: Domesday states that Walter de Caen held Sibton (given to him byWilliam's widow) and Swein of Essex held Peyton--Walter having beendead since 1071.

William, according to some, was grandson of Lady Godiva & brother ofHarold Godwyn's wife, while not necessarily entirely true, probablythere was some relationship.
---------------------------------------------------
According to Crispin and Macary, "William (Guillaume) Malet deGraville stands out as one of the most imposing figures at theConquest. There can be no doubt about his presence there, which issubscribed to by William of Poitiers, Guy of Amiens, Orderic Vital, and all the historians of this epoch. So much has been placed onrecord concerning him that just a few facts of his life will berecited here. He was probably descended from Gerard, a Scandinavianprince and companion of Duke Rollo, which gave the name of the fief ofGerardville or Graville, near Havre. Robert, the eldest son, occurs ina document of about 990 in Normandy. On his mother's side WilliamMalet was of Anglo-Saxon origin, for she was probably the daughter ofLeofric, Earl of Mercia, and Godwa or Godgifu, the supposed sister ofThorold the Sheriff in the time of Edward the Confessor, and thereforethe aunt of Edwin and Morcar, Earls of Northumberland. He was nearlykilled in the battle of Hastings but was rescued by the sire deMontfort and William of Vieuxpont, and was appointed by William theConqueror to take charge of the body of Harold, a statement that hasbeen disputed. The consensus of opinion favors it, and it is mostlogical if William Malet's mother was as stated the sister of AlgarII., 7th Earl of Mercia, who was the father of Alditha, wife ofHarold. He accompanied King William at the reduction of Nottingham andYork in 1068, for which he was rewarded with the shreivalty of land inthat county. Gilbert de Gand and Robert Fitz Richard were alsocommanders in this expedition. The following year he was besieged inthe castle of York by Edgar, the Saxon prince, and was only saved fromsurrender by the timely arrival of the Conqueror. In the same year hewas attacked by the Danes, who captured the city of York with greatslaughter and took William Malet, his wife and children, prisoners, but their lives were spared, as was that of Gilbert de Gand, for thesake of their ransoms. There is evidence that he was slain in thisyear, but it is uncertain and the date of his death is unknown. Anentry in Domesday that "William Malet was seized of this place(Cidestan, Co. Suffolk), where he proceeded on the King's servicewhere he died," would indicate that his death occurred during thecompilation of that book. He was witness to a charter of King Williamto the church of St. Martin-le-Grand, in London, and is there styled"princeps," which title, however, was honorary and not hereditary, having ceased with his death."
------------------------------------------
William Malet, or Guillaume, as he may have been called, "Sire deGraville", came from Graville Sainte Honorine between Le Havre andHarfleur, in what is today the French province of Normandy. He is saidto have had a Norman father and a Saxon (read English) mother, and hadsome sort of association with King Harold of England before theconquest. William, through his Saxon mother, may actually have beenrelated to King Harold, and also to the well known Lady Godiva. It isalso possible that William and Harold were both God fathers of DukeWilliam of Normandy's daughter, Abela.
The Malet Castle at Graville Sainte Honorine had an importantstrategic location, at the mouth of the Seine. It has now fallen intothe sea, though some remnants of it may still be visible. A largesection of wall with large iron rings attached was still there justover 100 years ago. The Abbey church, in which some of the Malets areburied, is now in the town of Le Havre. Though William Malet hadconnections to both sides in the conflict to come, his main allegiancewas to Duke William of Normandy.
William fought with distinction at Hastings, as the following Excerptfrom Wace's "Roman de Rou" attests:
William whom they call Mallet,
Boldly throws himself among them;
With his flashing sword
Against the English he makes furious onset;
But his shield they clove,
And his horse beneath him killed,
And himself they would have slain,
When came the Sire de Montfort
And Lord William de Vez-Pont
With the great force which they had,
Him they bravely rescued.
There many of their men they lost;
Mallet they remounted on the field
On a fresh war-horse.
When the battle was over, Duke William entrusted William Malet toattend to the burial of the dead English king. The body was buriedunder a heap of stones on top of a cliff at Hastings overlooking theshore that Harold had so bravely defended. William placed a stone onthe grave with the epitaph:
"By command of the Duke, you rest here a King, O Harold, that you maybe guardian still of the shore and sea".
This burial of Harold was only temporary and the body was laterre-buried at Harold's Abbey at Waltham.
William and his brother Durand held lands in Lincolnshire, England, during the reign of Edward the Confessor, and through the reign ofHarold right up to the conquest, in addition to those in Normandy. These Lincolnshire holdings, all in the Danelaw, probably came fromWilliam and Durand's mother. After the conquest William's Englishholdings were greatly increased, again, principally in the Danelaw, asEnglish lands were taken from their Saxon owners and handed over toNorman Barons. It is likely that Duke William conferred these estateson William, partly because of his loyalty and skill in battle, butalso because of his prior connections with his Danish "cousins" there.Perhaps the Duke felt that William was the best man to bring theseproud, warlike and independent settlers under the control of their newKing.
William was dead at the time of the Domesday survey in 1086, but theholdings at that time of his son Robert, and of his wife, give a goodindication of the extent of his estates. He held large parts of whatare today Suffolk and Norfolk, with smaller amounts of land inLincolnshire and Yorkshire. Eye, in Suffolk appears to have beenWilliam's stronghold. Here he built a Motte and Bailey castle, afterthe Norman fashion. Nothing remains of the Norman fortifications, butthe outline of the baileys and "Castle Mound", are still evident. There is even a slight indication of where the Market, founded byWilliam Malet under Royal License would have been held.
William married Hesilia Crispin, by whom he had two sons, Robert andGilbert, and one daughter, Beatrice. Robert and possibly Gilbert, along with their uncle Durand, accompanied their father at the battleof Hastings. The arms shown at the top of the page, likely carried bythe Malets at Hastings, were used by many generations of the Maletfamily, both in England and in France, and can be seen on the Bayeuxtapestry.
William was made Sheriff of York and granted considerable lands inYorkshire following the building of the first Norman castle there (themound now supports 'Clifford's Tower') in 1068. He and his fellowcaptains, Robert Fitz-Richard and William of Ghent, with 500 pickedknights had to fight off a local revolt, headed by Edgar the Atheling;this in or shortly after January 1069. Robert Fitz-Richard and many ofhis men were killed and it was only by the timely arrival of KingWilliam that the City was saved. The natives remained restless and hadanother, token go, as soon as King William left but were quickly putdown. The troops were strengthened and another castle built on theother side of the river from the original but, notwithstanding, inSeptember 1069, William, his wife and two of his children werecaptured by a combined force of Danes and English under Sweyn ofDenmark supported by Earls Waltheof and Gospatric and theNorthumbrians, when York fell to them after a terrible fight. This ledto King William ordering the burning and killing of everything in thenorth and Domesday, even 16 years later, records most of northernEngland as still being waste and uninhabited.
William, his wife and two children must have been released some timelater and William retained most of his lands apart from those inYorkshire, which will have come with the office of Sheriff, which hadbeen taken from him. At some point the King awarded William theappellation of "Princep", and in the Chart granted by the King to thechurch of St. Martin le Grand, his signature appears as "WilielmusMalet Princep". In the context of the times, Princep would likely havebeen interpreted as "leader, or chief". William is believed to havedied fighting "Hereward the Wake" in the Fens near Ely Cathedral, which lies between South Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk (andin the middle of the Malet holdings), in 1071. The Domesday bookrecords that "...He went into the marsh", and that "...he went on theKing's service, where he died".
William is generally accepted to be the progenitor of many of thevarious branches of the Malet family (those that can trace their linesback that far), both in England and in France. The descendants ofDurand continued to hold lands in Lincolnshire, and are recorded inIrby on Humber up to the 16th century.

NORMAN SHERIFFS
By 1066, when William the Conqueror seized power, he replaced all ofthe existing sheriffs with his own loyal comrades in arms. WhenWilliam conveyed the offices of sheriff to his Normans, he alsobestowed to them the title "Vicomte," which added nobility to theirpositions. He allowed Vicomte sheriffs to build castles, a powerfulsymbol of privilege and a far greater honor than had ever been grantedto prior Anglo-Saxon sheriffs. The castles were a sign of aggressiveforce. This fortification symbolism helped identify William as theincomparable authority in the newly conquered land.
The most famous William the Conqueror sheriff was a man named WilliamMalet, a ferocious warrior. During the Battle of Hasting his horse waskilled from under him. Mounting a fresh horse, he continued leadingthe charge, killing the enemy along the way, to a Norman victory.William continued to use Malet to crush insurgent forces within hisreign.. . . As a reward, William named Malet the sheriff of Yorkshire.
King William sought aggressive types for the office of sheriff whoseambitions were consistent with his. Those willing to squeeze thepeasants to their maximum were the best qualified in William's eyes.He instituted the practice of selling the office to the highestbidder. This brought forth evil men willing to pay exorbitant pricesfor the office and then willing to do whatever it took to recoup theirinvestment. . . No one spoke out for the peasantry because their onlyrepresentative to the king was the very sheriffs embezzling them. Themost notorious was Picot, Sheriff of Cambridgeshire. . . . Monksdescribe him as:
a hungry lion, a prowling wolf, a crafty fox, a filthy swine, a dogwithout shame, who stuffed his belly like an insatiable beast asthough the whole country were a single corpse.
If events reduced production within the shires and thereby reduced theprosperity of King William, the sheriff was then forced to press thepeasants even more to make up for the deficiency. In 1083, Williamlevied the highest tax assessment of his reign to make up for theprevious year's famine and low production. . . . To enhance theirincome, sheriffs commonly pillaged Church properties. . . .
The only coin in circulation in twelfth century England was the silverpenny. It was the responsibility of the sheriff to police the silvercontent in the coinage. If the sheriff failed to see that the tenderdid not meet quality assurance in the amount of silver content versusthe alloy percentage, he was held personally liable for the shortage.Because this burden was placed on the sheriffs in the area thateffected them the most, their pocketbooks. . . .Enforcement of thematter was particularly unkind under the reign of King Henry II topunish offenders that circulated "bastard" coins. The first offenseroutinely resulted in the severing of a hand or castration. . . .
The coming of King John in 1199 brought about one of the most stirringperiods in the history of the medieval sheriff. . . . As King Johnwaged war against the Welsh, the French, and the Irish, he placed theemphasis upon the sheriffs to finance his wars. . . . Because of thesheriff's authority and ability to raise funds, the 13th century sawthe sheriff as the most powerful administrative force in medievalEngland. . . .
King John personally knew every one of the 100 or so sheriffs that heappointed between 1199 and 1216. Some were his intimate friends andmost trusted advisors. In contrast to the prior practice of KingRichard, he appointed only two members of the Church to the post. Heinstead chose to select intense, secular men, with strong militarybackgrounds. . . . His deliberate selection of men of harsh demeanor .. . was considered by people of his time as a substantive answer forthe difficult issues of the day . . . tough men for tough times. . ..William Malet, of Granville, Normandy; also held lands in Lincsbefore 1066 (possibly by virtue of his mother's putative status ofEnglishwoman); granted the feudal Barony of Eye, Suffolk, followingthe Conquest, in which he was one of William I's chief lieutenants, being allegedly given the task by William of burying Harold's bodyafter Hastings; Sheriff of Yorks 1068; married Hesilia Crispin (living1086), gggdau of Rollo The Dane, Duke of Normandy, and died c1071.[Burke's Peerage]

General Notes: Roger de Mortimer, deemed by some to have been son of William deWarren, and by others, of Walter de St. Martin, brother of thatWilliam, was founder of the abbey of St. Victor, in Normandy. "It isreported," says Dugdale, "that in the year 1054 (which was twelveyears before the Norman Conquest), when Odo, brother of Henry, King ofFrance, invaded the territory of Evreux, Duke William sent this Roger, then his general (with Robert, Earl of Ewe, and other stout soldiers),to resist his attempts; who meeting with Odo near to the castle ofMortimer, gave him battle, and obtained a glorious victory. It isfurther observable of this Roger that he was by consanguinity alliedto the Norman duke (afterwards king, by the name of William theConqueror), his mother being niece to Gunnora, wife of Richard, Dukeof Normandy, great grandmother to the Conqueror." The presumed son ofthis Roger, Ralph de Mortimer, accompanying the Duke of Normandy inhis expedition against England, was one of his principal commanders atthe decisive battle of Hastings. FRAMLINGHAM CASTLE, NEAR SAXMUNDHAM, SUFFOLK. Not all destinationsneed have a genealogical connection. Here is one worth visiting formany reasons -- history, architecture, setting, even the great pubmeals a few yards from the gate.
The first castle on the site was built by Roger Bigod, on land hereceived from Henry I. The castle seen today was begun some yearslater, in 1190, by another Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk. Anearlier fortification had been destroyed after being forfeited byRoger's father to King Henry II (for being part of
the rebellion of 1173-74).
Framlingham has massive curtain walls 40 feet high and eight feetthick, sectioned by 13 towers, and surrounded by deep ditches. It is agood walk all the way around. For many years the castle was owned bythe Howard family. It was here that Mary Tudor waited out the LadyJane Grey crisis in 1553, and gathered her support, leaving fromFramlingham on her triumphal journey to London.
Years later, the Howard family sold the castle to Sir Robert Hitcham, and when he died in 1636 he left it to Pembroke College, Cambridge. The building on the site of the old great hall was built during thesetimes and subsequently served as the parish poorhouse until it wasclosed in the 1830s. Now it houses
the castle office and gift shop of English Heritage, which maintainsthe site.
Framlingham is a fascinating place, whether or not you include Howardor Hitcham or Bigod in your family tree. It played many parts on thenational and local stage. There is an audio tour toenhance the visualimpact -- with 28 points of interest on the walls and in the castleyard.
Some English Heritage sites are open year round, and this is one ofthem (for a picture, hours, etc. visit Framlingham Castle ismagnificent. Take a few moments to try and imagine 20,000 loyalsupporters of Mary camped in and around the castle in 1553.

General Notes: [jweber3.FTW]
Shrewsbury, Earldom of: In early December 1074 Roger de Montgomery wascreated Earl of Shropshire or Shrewsbury. As with other medievalearldoms, little distinction was then made between the county town andcounty proper when designating a specific name for a title, chieflybecause an earl, who was then more or less and official, albeit oftenhereditary, was inconceivable except as earl of a county.
Roger was son of another Roger de Montgomery, seigneur of the Normanplaces (St Germain-de-Montgomery and Ste-Foy-de-Montgomery) of thatname in the Calvados region. He was a prominent member of the noblesgrouped around William (later William I of England, The Conqueror) ofNormandy well before the 1066 invasion of England but stayed behind inNormandy during the actual enterprise. The year after Hastings hewent to England and received land grants in Sussex. "Not all founders [of monasteries] were known for their
kindness. Fulk of Anjou, plunderer, murderer, robber, and swearer of
fale oaths, a truly terrifying character of fiendish cruelty, foundednot
one but two large abbeys. This Fulk was filled with unbridled passion,a
temper directed to extremes. Whenever he had the slightest difference
with a neighbor he rushed upon his lands, ravaging, pillaging, raping,
and killing; nothing could stop him, least of all the commandments ofGod.
This appalling man had countless crimes upon his conscience, but
when seized with a fit of remorse he abandoned himself to incredible
penances. Thus the very tomb of St. Martin, whose monks he had
ill-treated, saw him prostrate, with bare feet and in penitent'sdress; and
four times during his life he went to Jerusalem as a devout pilgrim,
treading half-naked the sorrowful road of the passion while two of his
servants flogged him until the blood flowed, crying, "Lord, receivethy
perjured Fulk!" "

Subject: Re: FULK THE BLACK
"Fulk is spoken of elsewhere with admiration. R. W.
Southern, The Making of the Middle Ages, pp. 83-86, calls him (86) a
'man of note' and a 'pioneer in the art of feudal government,'particularly in
the building and strategic use of stone castles. Bernard Bachrach's
biography of Fulk is more openly admiring in an Ayn Rand sort of way.Fulk
may not have been particularly sensitive, but a fitting progenitor forthe
likes of Henry II & Edward I."

LADY GODIVA
About the year 1028, a wealthy
widow named Godgifu, "gift
of God", or Godiva (there are 17
different spellings of her
name), believing herself to be on her
deathbed, bequeathed
her considerable property to the
monastery at Ely, England.
But she recovered and a decade or
so later remarried, soon
interesting her new husband,
Leofric, the earl of Mercia,
in her charitable donations. Leofric
and Godiva moved to
Coventry in Warwickshire from
Shrewsbury, Shropshire where
Leofric had earned his fortune in the
mutton trade.
In 1043 the earl and his lady founded
a Benedictine
monastery at Coventry on the site of
the present-day
bombed-out ruin of Coventry
Cathedral and nearby new
Coventry Cathedral which was built
by German students after
World War II. On October 4, the
monastery (or abbey) which
was named in honor of St. Eunice of
Saxmundham and was
dedicated to St. Peter, St. Osburg,
All Saints, and the
Virgin Mary, to whom Godiva was
particularly devoted. Her
later gifts of gold and gems made
the monastery chapel one
of the richest in England. After the
earl's death, Lady
Godiva continued her patronage of
at least half a dozen
more monasteries.
Yet, it is not for such good works
that Lady Godiva is
remembered, but rather for her
legendary ride through
Coventry in the nude. The people of
Coventry, as most
subjects of Edward the Confessor in
England, were suffering
from the burden of high taxes. But
their pleas for relief
went unheeded by Leofric, who had
his own obligations to
meet and who was not above
passing them on to the
citizenry. Instead of mercy,
Coventry's inhabitants
received notice of a tax increase. To
meet it they would
have to impoverish themselves.
Filled with compassion for the
desperate people, Lady
Godiva approached her husband - as
she had on earlier
occasions - to ask that he suspend
the onerous levies.
Perhaps angered at her persistence,
and wishing to put an
end to her tiresome requests, the
earl made an outlandish
proposal. "Mount your horse naked,"
he said to his wife,
"and pass through the market of the
town, from one end to
the other, when the people are
assembled." On her return
from the ride, he promised, Godiva
would be granted her
wish and the townspeople would be
spared the burdensome
taxes.
Leofric expected his wife to
withdraw in shock and
embarrassment. Instead, to his
astonishment, she agreed.
The following day, completely
unclothed , Godiva mounted a
charger and rode through the
marketplace. She was
accompanied by two female
servants also on horseback,
though fully dressed.
As for Leofric's taxes, the humbled
earl rewarded his
wife's act of compassion by lifting all
tolls on Coventry
except those for keeping horses. As
late at the 17th
century, the town was still boasting
of such a tax-exempt
status.

While Duke Robertwas away on pilgrimage, he went to Spain and distinguished himself infighting the infidels. When he returned to Normandy, he was furious tolearn that the boy William had succeeded his father in the Duchy, declaring that a bastard ought not to rule over him and other Normans.Accordingly he rebelled and ravaged the lands of his neighbours, particularly those of Humphrey de Vieilles; whose son Roger deBeaumont marched against him, and in the battle which followed Rogerde Toeni and two of his sons were slain. He was a benefactor to theabbey of I'Estrée and confirmed a gift to the abbey of Lire, andwitnessed a charter for Jumièges. He married, perhaps 2ndly,[g]Godeheut, whose parentage is unknown.
