This William Bonville, K.G., Lord Bonville of Chewton, marriedMargaret
Grey [not Merriet], daughter of Reynold Grey, Lord Grey of Ruthin, and
his wife Margaret de Ros.

The parentage of William Bonville's wife Margaret was not generally
known until fairly recently; it is obtained from a dowry agreement of
1414 recorded in the Close Rolls. Further confirmation comes from the
fact that Margaret is referred to as a noblewoman in a papal registerof
1426, more than 20 years before her husband was raised to the peerage.

942080. John* Perkins,2 son of Henry* Perkins, was born about 13752 and died after 1399.2

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

John Perkins was seneschal to Thomas Despencer, Earl of Gloucester, 21Richard II. It would seem that the Perkins family held a sort ofhereditary position as stewards of the Despencers who had enormousestates in various counties. It is not surprising that the name ofParkins or Perkins is found in close proximity to the principal manorsand residences of the Despencers, possibly descendants to the stewardof those manors.
He, John Perkins, was acknowledged, in the time of Richard II, to holdan estate of the manor of Madresfield in Worcestershire by fealty and8s. 5p. per annum. Madresfield in Worcestershire adjoins HanleyCastle, the principal seat of the Despencers. Hanley Castle was thefortification intended to guard the great chase or forest of Malvern.
In 1 Edw. IV (1460) he had a grant of land at Shipton under Whichwood, another of their former manors forfeited.

945088. William* Drake,2 son of Robert* Drake 2 and Ellen,2 was born before 1356 in Great Waltham, Essex, England2 and died before 2 May 1420 in Great Waltham, Essex, England.2

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

William was first mention on Court Rolls for a session on July 3, 1392where he was named the heir of his father Robert and awarded six acresof land as his right an heritage. This suggests that he was of age bythat date. However, he was the elder of the two sons (Drake inEngland, p. 72), and since it is highly likely based on Court Rollsthat his brother was born before 1356, it is plausible to concludethat his latest birthyear was before 1356. He was regularly named inthe Court Rolls between 1393 and 1420, "this usually for payingpannage on two pigs or piglets, or for minor offences such as leavinga dung heap on the common." From "Drake in England" p. 72: "A curiousentry, on 27 November 1410, shows him being presented for having threepigs aged 8 years, i.e., which were too old to be productive. As wehave seen he was named with his brother and cousin John Drake in thelist of those doing homage in 1400 and likewise partnering them inbeing fined for default of Court in 1413. Between 1407 and 1408 he wasfined for failing to do his office as aletaster and again in 1416 and1418 for the same offence. (As this inolved sitting in a pool of theale being tasted to find if there was too much sugar, in which casethe leather breeches would stick to the bench, the reluctance ofaletasters to fulfill their office is perhaps understandable.)"

possibly Knight of Berwick and Chillingham

"With the croked foot", Knight, of Heaton in Northumberland; M.P. forNorthumberland. In 1398 he obtained the castle, manor, and lordship ofWark-on-Tweed from ralph, Earl of Westmorland, in exchange for othermanors.

WARK (UPON THE TWEED) CASTLE

BACK

Beside the river Tweed sits a large rock and rubble mound overlookingthe present day village of Wark, all that is left of the ancient motteand bailey castle of Wark, or as it was sometimes called the castle of 'Carham' built by Walter Espec with the
permission of King Henry I of England (1100-1135) in the early part ofthe 12th century. The site originally consisted of what appears to bean unusual six sided plan keep which was was five stories high, "ineach of which there were five great murder
holes, shot with great vaults of stone except one stage which is oftimber, so that great bombards can be shot from each of them" (1517account). A wall encircling this keep curved round and down to linkwith the bailey courtyard wall. This wall
itself was divided into two sections to allow the garrison toprogressively retreat if the gatehouse was taken during times ofsiege. The gatehouse opened close to the Tweed as the river wasfordable here and for added defense a trench ran from the
river passed the gate house and up around the keep perched on it'srock mass. The castle was a very ugly building but it was an extremelyfunctional structure taken it's position on the border marches andbeing under continual threat from the Scots.
Though regarded by some as a minor castle when compared to the likesof Norham castle it still had it's part to play in the pages of borderhistory.

Wark was attacked by King David I of Scots (1124-1153) on threeseparate occasions in 1126 when it was taken and held by the Scots fora short time. It was then besieged unsuccessfully in 1138 while theScot burnt down Northumberland. Then in 1139 it
was again besieged when the English used it as a base for aretaliatory strike into Scotland. Eventually the garrison agreed tosurrender on condition they could leave with their lives andpossessions while the castle was slighted and made
unserviceable.

In 1157 Wark was rebuilt by King Henry II of England (1154-1189). Butby 1216 it had again been destroyed by the Scots before being rebuiltagain. In 1349 one of the most famous events at Wark took place whenKing Edward III of England (1327-1377) who
was attending a court ball at the castle noticed that Lady Salisburyhad dropped her garter. As he bend down to offer the garter back tothe embarrassed Lady he saw some of his courtiers whisper and snigger. The King quickly rebuked them saying one day
they would count themselves honoured to wear the garter. Hence theOrder of the Garter was established.

In 1399 King Richard II of England was replaced by the usurper HenryIV (1399-1413). Since the peace treaty between Scotland and Englandhad been signed during Richard's reign there was doubt as to it'svalidity. So to test the water the Scots burnt
down Wark castle. In reply the following year the English tried totake Edinburgh castle.

In 1419 William Haliburton, the governor of Fast castle, with only 23men took Wark castle by surprise using ropes and grappling hooks. Someaccounts say he slew all that he found therein, other accounts claimthat while Haliburton negotiated the
surrender of the keep from Sir Robert Ogle (since the courtyard hadalready been seized) he and his men were surprised by a fresh group ofEnglish troops who climbed into the castle through it's sewage pipe. All the Scots were killed and beheaded their
bodies thrown outside while their heads were put on stakes upon thekeep's battlements as a warning to other Scots raiders.

In 1513 the English invaded France. Under the terms of the alliancebetween Scotland and France this was an act of war against Scotland.Consequently King James IV of Scots (1488-1513) with a large armyinvaded England. He then used the gigantic cannon
'Mons Meg' to bombard and slight the castles of Wark and Norham, whileEtal and Ford castles were simply stormed. After this the Scots armywas defeated and King James killed at the battle of Flodden.

Wark castle must have been quickly repaired by the English as the 1517account showed it to be fully equipped and operational, boasting abarrack/stable block in it's inner courtyard able to house 140 men andtheir horses. Making Wark an ideal location
for mounting lightning cavalry raids into Scotland.

In 1543 the English failed to bring about the marriage of the infantMary Queen of Scots (1542-1567) to the English Prince Edward bybribes, hence from 1544 to 1549 they resorted to raids of fire andsword throughout Scotland to try and force this
union. So the days became known as the wars of the 'Rough Wooing'.

Wark and Cornhill tower along with several other English border keepswere used as bases to conduct such raids. In 1544 John Carr and a bodyof horsemen from Wark attacked Smailholm tower and village stealing123 cattle and 8 horses. In June 1546 the
Wark garrison raided Smailholm again stealing 60 cattle and taking 4prisoners. In July they returned with the Cornhill garrison this timestealing only 6 cattle.

These attacks by the Wark garrison eventually caused the Pringlefamily of Smailholm to become 'assured Scots'. Usually 'assured Scots'were Scots lords who favoured the marriage union with England and werewilling to fight their own countrymen to
achieve this goal. The Earl of Lennox for example as an 'assured Scot'used his war fleet to attack Rothesay castle and Dunoon castle on thewest coast on behalf of King of England . Whereas the Pringles in thisinstance were so sick of the border
fighting they wished to remain neutral and agreed in 1548 not to fightthe English or help the Scots so long as their lands around Smailholmwere left unmolested.

No further raids appear to have been made on Smailholm by the Warkgarrison but likely this was because both Wark and Cornhill werebombarded and stormed by the Scots and French armies under GeneralAndre' de Montalbert, Sieur d'Esse'. Wark with it's
courtyard breached resulted in bloody hand to hand fighting so it canbe lamented that,

"Auld Wark upon the Tweed

Has been mony a man's deid"

After the end of the 'Rough Wooing', Wark appears have been repairedas shown in survey papers from the 1580's . But like Cornhill it waseventually abandoned with it's stones used in the 1700's to buildother modern houses and walls nearby.

The name Ogle and its many derivations are so ancient that the exactorigin, spelling and true meaning of the name may be lost inantiquity.
The name Ogle may have come from the Celts who immigrated from WesternEurope to the British Isles as early as 1000 BC. The Swedish nameOgell, which existed in the eighth century, may have been the sourceof our name. Some researchers believe that the
name Ogle, or its equivalent, was Gotho-Scandinavian, possibly fromJutland.

The first identified Ogle or Hoggell ancestor among the English, aHumphrey de Ogle, was, in about the eleventh century, granted, "allsuch lands and liberties as he or any of his predecessors had beforethe coming of the Normans." Therefore, knowing
who his "predecessors" were was of prime importance to Humphrey deOgle, a Saxon, because it enabled him to regain his land from theNorman conquerors of England.
Historians record that in Northumberland only a handful of Saxonfamilies survived the Norman takeover. The Ogles of Ogle (a smallhamlet) and the Roddams of Roddam, who probably did homage for theirlands, were among the few survivors.

The history of the Ogles in England, during the 600 years followingthe landing of William the Conqueror in 1066, is rich and colorful. The Ogles' history kept close pace with events in Northumberland--thewild border region between England and
Scotland--where the Ogles originated, expanded and flourished.
Scores of English Border families in Northumberland held their landsin fief of the king for wars and raids on the Scottish Border. ManyOgles were knighted for service to Crown and Country. At least sevenlords and thirty knights descended from
Humphrey Ogle, Esq. Most Ogles and Ogleses in America are very likelydescendants of King Edward I through the children of Sir Robert Ogle(1380-1436) of Ogle Castle and Matilda (Maude ) Grey, daughter of SirThomas Grey of Heton. Matilda, a descendant
of King Edward I, married Sir Robert in 1399. They had severalchildren.

The Ogle motto is:
Prenez en Grι
"Accept in Gratitude"
