Lynn Arderne shares with us the family's place in history: during the
English Civil War of the 17th century Sir Ralph Arderne (1608)
supported Oliver Cromwell but his son, Sir John Arderne, supported
King Charles II and went into exile with him until the Restoration,
when he was knighted at Whitehall and appointed Sheriff of Cheshire. A
similar situation arises during the Wars of Roses when our family
supported the Lancastrians, through marriage and property ties.

With thanks to Steve Brown, Lynn Arderne and Bruce Ardern Note from
Lynn Arderne: There is a South African branch to the family., begun in
the early 1800s, when a young Arderne son, Richard Crewe Arderne,
decided to make his fortune in South Africa. Unfortunately he and his
wife died shortly after arriving in SA in 1849 but their son, John
George Arderne (b. 1838), was the first male Arderne born in Africa
and the Southern African branch are all descended from this one man.

Bruce Ardern has Ardernes in Cheshire -- Altrincham, Timperley &

370024. Thomas* Grosvenor, son of Thomas Grosvenor and Joan Venables, was born about 1425 in Hulme Walfield, Congleton, Cheshire, England and died after 1460 in Drayton in Hales, Market Drayton, Shropshire, England.

General Notes: Many people in World Connect have two Thomas Grosvenors in succession, the elder being son of Sir Robert of Hulme. However most have thisThomas's mother being Joan Venables. This does not fit with theThomas who was son of Sir Robert, because according to Burke's Peeragethat Thomas married Katherine Fesant (who outlived him and wastherefore his last wife, and mother of his eldest children andtherefore his first wife (ie. his only wife)). I feel that the daterange between the eldest Thomas born c1277 and Randle born c1455justifies three Thomases in succession. This allows for this Thomasto be son of Thomas & Joan Venables, while that Thomas was son of theThomas identified in Burke's Peerage as married to Katherine Fesant.

General Notes: MCS states that Randle & Margaret Savage have inadequate proof as totheir parenthood.

Randle Mainwaring of Carincham, IPM 3 Henry VII (1488), naming Randleaged 18 eldest son & heir; m. Margaret, daughter of Hugh Davenport,Esq. of Henbury. [Magna Charta Sureties]

Note: Although MCS states that proof is lacking for Randle'sparentage. When discussing Randle's grandson Randle Grosvenor, MCSstates that he was a descendant of Thomas de Swynnerton, which mightlend support to this parentage.
