General Notes: John Washbourne is the earliest ancestor which can be supported byexisting documentation. Although for well over a century, genealogistshave claimed he was the son of John Washburn and Joan Mytton ofBengeworth and Wichenford, and thus of royal lineage through hismother, there is no concrete documentation of such a relationship. In1538, when registration became compulsory, John Washbourne and hiswife, Emme, appear recorded as residents of Bengeworth, a suburb ofEvesham, six or eight miles northeast from Little Washbourne and about20 miles southeast of Wichenford in Worcestershire, England. In hiswill, 1546, John describes himself as "John Wassheburne, husbandman."He had fields in Bengeworth and a house and buildings in town, enoughfor the comfortable living of the family but not for luxuries. Thearms of the Wichenford Washbournes were blazoned on the south windowof the church as benefactors. In his will he directs that his "body beburied in ecclesiastical sepulture of my parish church of Bengeworthand brought to sepulture with solemne dirge and mass for my soul andall Christian souls". He bequeaths to the church aforesaid two strikesof wheat and two of barley, after which follow bequests of smalldomestic and farm belongings, of his lands and houses to his eldestson John, of small annuities to the other children, and trifles to hisgrandchildren. His chattels inventory 26-8-8. Of John's wife, Emme, itis only known that she lived with her husband until her death in 1547,bore him children and made a will disposing of her property at herdeath. Her will reflects more the religious feelings and customs ofthe times. She says: "I bequeathe my soul unto Almighty God, theglorious virgin Saynt Mary, to the company of all the blessed Angelsand Saynts in hevyn, and my body to be buried within the Churchyard ofBengeworth".
These were the popular thoughts and expressions in the last two yearsof Henry VIII, "Defender of the Faith", and the year of MartinLuther's death. John and Emme left two married sons and two marrieddaughters, Katherine, wife of Danyell Hide, and Alis, wife of RobertMartin. The sons were John and William. All these names are gleanedfrom wills, as the Bengeworth registers were non-compulsory, and henceincomplete, until 1538. John's burial is recorded 8 January 1546 andEmme's 13 May 1547.
This is in response to a Sept. 24 note from Mark Wentling, of theWashburn Mail-list, and is posted to everyone on the list.

By the way John, what is your opinion on the connection between John &Emme W. and John W. and Joan Mytton? I know you've posted about itbefore, but I haven't heard talk of it in a while and was wondering ifyou had had any movement in either direction in recent months.

There has been some discussion in the past about whether or not Johnand Emme Washborne of Bengeworth, England, were the son anddaughter-in-law of John Washborne of Wichenford, England, who died in1517. I know that many Washburn descendants believe that theirancestry passes through John Washborne of Wichenford all the way backto a Sir Roger Washbourne, Knight, mentioned in a 1259 Inquisition. Myposition hasn't changed; I have seen no proof that John of Wichenfordeven had a son named John.
Rev. James Davenport published a careful transcription of the 1517will in "The Washbourne Family of Little Washbourne and Wichenford inthe County of Worcester," in 1907. From the will we learn that JohnWashborne had sons Robert, Richard, and Walter, daughter Ann, and agrandson John Washborne. Since he mentioned no son named John, thereis no proof that John Washborne of Bengeworth could have been his son. That doesn't mean, however, that it proves that John Washborne ofBengeworth couldn't have been his son, it simply means that proof islacking. The John Washborne who was the heir named in the will was agrandson, the son of his eldest son Robert Washborne, who hadpredeceased his father, and who was therefore the rightful heir ofJohn Washborne of Wichenford. This grandson John Washborne remained atWichenford where he married and had children contemporaneously withthe John Washbornes of Bengeworth. They were not the same men.
From Davenport's biographical sketch of John Washborne of Wichenfordwe learn that he had been married twice, first to Jone Mitton, daughter of William Mitton, Lord of Weston, and secondly to ElizabethMonington. William Mitton apparently had royal ancestry, hence thedesire to claim him as an ancestor of the American Washburns isstrong, but must be reserved until proof is discovered. Rev. Davenportclaims that John Washborne had four sons by Jone Mitton: Robert, John,Walter and Francis, and by Elizabeth Monington two sons: Anthony andRichard.
Of these six sons, Davenport notes, only 3 are mentioned in the will:
Robert, Walter and Richard. However, note that in mentioning Robertand Richard, Washborne leaves 20 pounds for their schooling, whichindicates that they were probably under age, and by his second wife.To me, it appears that John Washborne may have given the name Robertagain to a younger son after his eldest son Robert died. Davenportclaims that it is a mistake, for Washborne must have meant Anthonyinstead of Robert, but Davenport doesn't account for Washborne notmentioning sons John or Francis in his will, not even with a cow or anewe!
My point is simply that we have no proof that John Washborne ofWichenford had any more than the sons and daughter mentioned in hiswill. There is no proof that he had sons Francis or Anthony, and thereis no proof that John Washborne of Bengeworth was his son either.Although Sir Roger Washbourne may be the ultimate ancestor, eachgeneration back must be proven before being accepted, and the weaklink is John Washborne of Wichenford.
The will is in the Worcester Probate Office in folio #54 for 1517. Itis a follows:

The 1634 Visitation of Oxfordshire, presented in Vol. V of the Publications of the Harleian Society, includes pedigrees of both the Woodhull family of Mollington (page266) and of the Hall family of Banbury (page 270).
