In the Parish of South Tawton in Devonshire, England, there is anestate called "Endacott', from which the Endicott family gets itsname. This manor, originally spelled Yondecote, was in Saxon days partof the dowry of Githa, the wife of Earl Godwin, and sister of KingSvend of Denmark, and Mother of King Harold. In 1262, the manor was granted to William de Mehun and his wife,Giliana.

In 1327, Johannes de Yandecote and his wife Alicia de Melys wereassessed in South Tawton.

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

Reverend John Holding, Vicar of Stotfold, Bedfordshire, England, madean extensive search of old records and other historical datarelatingto the Spencers who migrated to America in 1632 fromBedfordshire,England. Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire areadjoiningterritory.(counties). Eton Socon lies near Badby, the home ofHenrySpencer, and Mr. Holding suggests that Thomas Spencer, the secondsonof Henry Spencer, was the Thomas Spencer who resided at Eton Soconin1433. The first official notice of the Spencer familyinBedfordshire, England, occurs in an official document issuedbycertain commissioners appointed by King Henry IV in the year 1433asthe result of an equiry that had been made by authority ofParlaiment. We are told that the Commons in the Parlaiment of 1433,thee havingbeen complaints that the country swarmed with robbers, andoppressorsof the people, and various evil doers, it was enacted thatcertaincommissioners in every county should have power to summon themallpersons of quality, and to administer to them an oath forbetterkeeping of the peace and observing the King's laws, bothastothemselves and their retainers. (See Blayde's VisitationofBedfordshire, pg ix) The list of persons of quality thussummonedincludes the names of Thomas Spencer and Johannes Spencer. InthePamphlet compiled by the Rev. John Holding, M.A., he says:"Oursearch must commence then with the first recorded fact of 1433,andfrom this as a starting point our investigation must proceed.TheHearld's Visitation Book of 1566 was made more than acenturyafterwards, and the pedigrees that given embrace some of 3 or4generations at last before a family could claim to rank amongthegentry." From an old manuscript in the British Museum, calledPhillip's MS. (No 10376) Mr Holding found material which statesthatThomas Spencer of Eton Socon left 3 sons: John, Robert and Thomas.Thesocial status of Thomas Spencer of Eton Socon is not shown in anyofthe Herald's Visitations, although it is stated that he was a manofsome standing in the county in 1433. Mr Holding says: "One thingiscertain, the Bedfordshire Spencers were allied to thoseofNorthamptonshire, but where the point of junction lies itisimpossible for us to say., as we have no material at our disposaltoenable us to decide. they must have satisfied the Hearlds intheirvisitations in 1566, 1634 and 1666, that they were the samefamily, otherwise they would not have been allowed to bear the samecoat ofarms and crest, as they did, with only one slight difference, thatwhereas on the bend sable of the Northampton arms, there arethreeescallops (shells) on the Bedfordshire shield, there arethreefleurs-di-lis. The crest is exactly the same a griffin's headbetweentwo wings expanded, emerging out of a mural crown."

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

Based on the Court Roll for the session held on May 29, 1477, ThomasDrake was then at least 12 years old, which places his birth in 1465at the latest.
From "Drake in England" p. 82, 83:
"As Thomas Drakes he was presented for not being in tithing and aged12 years and more at the Court held on 29 May 1477. It is interestingthat, like his uncle and namesake Thomas Drake, he was apparently notliving in the manor when his father died in 1510, for two years passedbefore he claimed his inheritance and, as we have seen, made provisionfor his sister's dower. The record of his admission to the lands andwoods lately held by his father, to which he was admitted as the sonand next heir, are described in detail on the Court Roll and is ofinterest in demonstrating this continuity of tenure in the family. "Tothis Court comes Thomas Drake the son and heir of William Drake lateof Lytelhey and is admitted by himself (i.e. in person) to nine acresof land, parcell of a half virgate of land called Eldefeldys, one acreand a half of land, parcell of Grangerys; two acres of land of theBlacche land; seven acres of land, parcell of a half virgate of landcalled Symonjeffreyes: one grove of wood and pasture containing twoacres and a half called Grangerysgrove, and one croft of landcontaining one acre of land and a half called Grovecroft, parcell of ahalf virgate called Eldefeldes as his (word illegible) andinheritance." "Eldfeldys" is almost certainly to be identified with"Eldo land" held by Nicholas Drake who also held "Granger land" and aparcel of "Symon Geffray's land" ca. 1328.
Thomas Drake was elected to serve as Constable at the Court held on 15June 1512, and appears in the Court Rolls as a juror several timesbetween 1513 and 1522. He also acquired a croft containing two acrescalled Arnelles or Amgelles in the Rectory Manor of Great Waltham forwhich he paid a yearly rent of 18d. At the Court held on 5 February1515 he did homage for a cotland containing 5 acres with three housescalled Saches which he held in the right of his wife Agnes Butler. Hedied, leaving a will which has not survived, before the Court held atGreat Waltham on 1 June 1542, when his death was reported and the willmentioned in a subsequent surrender.
At some time before his death Thomas Drake had settled at Slamsey inWhite Notley. This manor had belonged to Lees or Leighs Priory inEssex and, when leased by the Prior and Convent to Richard Duke on 12May 1525, was held by "Thomas Colette of Moche (i.e. Great) Waltham"whose term had five years to run. After the suppression of the Priorythe "manor of Slamesey als. Slamondesey als. Slampsey Oldhall andBrenthall" was granted by Letters Patent to Sir Richard Rich, theKing's Solicitor-general and steward of Great Waltham, to hold as thetwentieth part of a knight's fee. There was, therefore, ample reasonfor a tenant at Great Waltham acquiring other lands in White Notley. From the Lay Subsidy Of 1523-24 we know that neither Thomas nor anyother Drake was taxed at White Notley but Agnes Drake was taxed therein 1543-44 and Thomas Drake buried there on 27 November 1541. "

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

Agnes was the widow of William Butler when she married Thomas Drake. The date is not known, but her second husband did homage for her landsin 1515 and at the Court held on November 5, 1522 she surrendered herinterest in Saches to her husband, reference being made to an earliersurrender in 1502-03...to his use. In the lay Subsidy of 1543-44 Agnespaid 4d. for her lands in White Notley and she was buried there, awidow, on September 30, 1550. It is unlikely that she was born laterthan 1490
