As I mentioned in my last email, the most interesting thing we foundin the Nottingham archives was an account written by George Dodson, the grandson of William Hodgkinson of Felly Mill. It is an account ofthe families of his mother and father. It essentially confirms theletter we had and that you sent me, regarding the lineage of JamesMasland. Our Hodgkinson ancestor appears to have been miller WilliamHodgkinsons’s youngest son, Joseph, the writer's uncle. I have aphotocopy of the original document. This document gives the immediatefamily history William began working a lease on Felly Hall at age ten, thrived, and had seven children. This is the text:

A Short Historical Account of the Family’s of the Hodgkinson’s andDodson’s but particular of myself Geo. Dodson who wrote the followingin the month of June and in the year of our Lord, one thousand sevenhundred and eighty.

Having disposed of my mill, and had little or nothing to do I haveundertook to write a few sheets, on my Father and Mother’s family, anda particular history of myself if it please God in whom I trust. MyMother’s name was Hodgkinson was born at Felly-Mill in the Country ofNottingham in the year 1728. Her father Wm. Hodgkinson was born in theyear 1696 and is still living at the advanced age of 84. His father,my mother’s grandfather, was born at Ashover in the Country of Derby,he lived at Pinxton-mill the most part of his time, where part of thefamily of Hodgkinson’s at this time succeeds him. He had severalchildren, for which he took care to make a handsome provision. He tookFelly-Mill for his youngest son, now my grandfather, when he was but10 years old, but after they had it for one year my grandfather beingso young, and the land and mill much out of order, so muchdisheartened him there having been no less than seven tenants in nineyears that he went to Lady Saville who at that time belong’dFelly-Mill, and gave her notice to leave the next Wednesday, but theOld Lady Insisted upon him staying, saying if he thought it any-waystoo dear, she would make him amends some way or other, so by fairpromises etc. she prevailed on him to keep it on, and very Lucky forthe Family he did; for tho my grandfather being then very young wasvery diligent and Industrious, and by his great care, along with hisFather’s assistance, began to Increase in Business and get money veryfast; my grandfather married Mary Eyre, of Kirkby-in-Asfield, of aWorthy and (?) Family, by whom he had Issue, Elizabeth, George,William, Mary, Thomas, Catherine and Joseph. I have heard my mothersay of Elizabeth, that she was a very amiable young woman, but neverhad the Happiness to enjoy a good state of Health. She died when shewas about 30 years of age. George married the daughter of Mr.Satterfield of Codnor park to his first wife but she died of thesmallpox, ere the nuptials of this happy marriage had been embracedlong. He remarried, Ann the Daughter of Samuel Coates of Anderwood forhis second wife. A woman of disposition that does credit to her sex,but few of them can equal. Mary, my mother, was universally beloved byall that knew her, and had an unblemished character; she was marriedto my father in the year 1754, she died December 4, 1769, in the 42ndyear of her Age. William died without Issue. Thomas married LydiaDaughter of Mr. Keyworth of Kirklington in the Country of Nottingham, and by whom she had Issue, two sons and four daughters; Catherine wasmarried to Mr. (?) Downing of Carterlane in the County of Derby, hadone Daughter who died in her Infancy to her second Husband she wasmarried to Thomas Hodgkinson, her own Cozen, of Pinxton-Mill in theCountry of Derby, by whom she had issue, two children George andCatherine who are now living. Joseph was Married but had no Issue; helived in Burton-Upon-Trent was by Occupation a tanner; but upon(crossed out) soon after the death of his wife he went into the Armywhere he remained till the year 1780 when he died; being a lieutenantin the Invalids at Plymouth, this as far as I know is the particularsof my Mother’s Family.

Invalid companies were soldiers who wanted to contribute to theircountry [England is the example we know of] but they were unfit formilitary service at the front so they were put into invalid companiesand used for things like guarding prisoners and garrison duty etc. They were usually invalided out of the army during a former action.

!Name: German verison of name is Heinrich or Henrich. US records alsolist
his first name as "Henry", especially "newer" records. Last namespelled
Gossler or Gosler.
!Marriage: His burial/death notice claims they ware married on 25 May1752 in
Toell, Hanover, Germany. Hers claims they were married on 15 June 1750in
Rotterdam. Both claim they moved to America right after marriage. Bothlist a
different amount of time (both around 31 years) that the person livedin the
state of matroimony. Based on the math of when each died & the timethey lived
as a married person, the year of 1752 is the correct marriage year soI used
the date & place listed in Heinrich's burial/death notice.
!Death: Will has two dates on it 8 Apr 1783 - 21 Feb 1784. Deathnotice gives
exact date.
!History: Occupation= Baker, Innkeeper, Religion-Lutheran. Owned landin
Reading & Alsace (NE of Reading). Death notice give birth date/place,death
date/place, etc. Both his burial/death notice & wife's says they had 5sons &
4 daughters. 2 daughters died before him, 1 son died before him & 2more sons
died after Heinrich but before his wife.
DOC# GG15 & numerous other sources claims he had 1 son named "Henry"that
married a "Miss Snell". They go on to lists their children & some
grandchildren. "Henry" is the only child (besides the missing deaddaughter)
whose baptism records are not at the church in question although"Henrich &
Elizabeth Gossler's" children were all Baptized & Buried there . Plus,if
"Henry" and "John Heinrich Wilhelm" are separate children, the childcount
for Heinrich & Dorothea in both buiral/death statements are wrong &
Heinrich's will doesn't list 1 of his sons. This leads me to theconclusion
that "Henry" who married Snell is really "John Henrich Wilhem" whomarried
Elisabeth Schnell & he went by Heinrich or Henry in most documents. This
allows most Church records to match for 3 generations.
Children listed in his will in order are: Frederick, Henry, ElizabethDorothea
Beck, John, Cathrina, & Andreas. This accounts for all living childrenat the
time of his death.
Burial/Death notice claims he was affected for the greater part of hislife by
gout attacts. He was confined to bed for 14 wks & 5 days at homebefore he

One of the first settlers of Dividing Creek, New Jersey
In 1751 SETH LORE (who's buried in the cemetery) gave 2 1/2 acres ofthe land for a house of worship and a burying ground. At that time thetrustees of the church were: William Dallas, Richard Lore, Jr. andNathan Shaw. The deed says the lot was on the uppermost part of SethLore's property. The Baptists in Dividing Creek had built the churchby 1755.

A traveling minister from Cohansey would preach here occasionally. Andfrom time to time the Rev. Nathaniel Jenkins and Rev. Robert Kelseywere the as well. In 1761 the church was organized and the Rev. SamuelHeaton became their first minister. It must be remembered thatBaptists from Newport / Port Norris area's were members of thischurch.

Also, there is a plaque in front of Seth Lore's grave (he's listedbelow). Seth Lore's grave marker is a large stone with S L carved init and beneath that, the year 1779 (his death). The plaque on theground in front of his grave says; "Seth Lore b. Circa 1710 inSouthold L. I., NY Original settler of Dividing Creek, he donated landfor the first Meeting House of the Dividing Creek Baptist Church in1751." [KA]

DALLAS FERRY (Port Norris)

In 1749 a few houses were built and the Dividing Creek Baptist Churchwas organized. Seth Lore donated the land and William Dallas, JonadabShepherd and Thomas Shepherd began building the log meeting house. Itstood on the site of the Baptist Cemetery in Dividing Creek and wascompleted in 1751. Seth Lore is buried in the cemetery whichsurrounded the meeting house and a sandstone marker with the initials"SL" marks his grave.

William Dallas, Jr. became a farmer. He owned 450 acres of land, 23head of cattle and six hogs. Samuel Dallas, a relative, was a largeland owner in Dallas Ferry. He brought his young nephew, IchabodLore, 2nd, to the village and sold him a farm. Ichabod Lore had ason, Levi Lore, who was born in Port Norris in 1840. Other childrenwere Mary, Charles, Elizabeth and Ichabod Lore, 3rd. Uriah Lorebought an interest in a steam saw mill and continued for eleven years.

In 1749, William Dallas, Sr., built a tavern in his village toaccommodate the oystermen and fishermen. In 1763 a four rod road waslaid from Cohansey Bridge in Bridgeton to Joseph Ogden's Mill Dam inFairton, crossing Rattlesnake Gut, then to the Cross Roads in NewEnglandtown to Cedarville, from there to Autuxit, then called Ogden'sMill, over the Oranoken at Beaver Dam across Dividing Creek bridge andinto Dallas Ferry.

In Middletown, now North Port Norris, Isaac Petersen built a house. There he and his wife raised thirteen children. This house standstoday, just north of Sockwell Road. An upstairs bedroom was framedwith exposed axe hewn timber. In his will dated 1813, Petersen handedthe property down to his children. Err "Shang" O'Neal, unmarried, wasthe last of the Petersen clan to occupy it. After his death theproperty was sold. It is now owned by Robert Lindsey of Port Norris.

In 1793 a road from Dallas Ferry northward through Haleyville toBuckshutem was laid out. Some of the early settlers between PortNorris and Haleyville were: Petersen, Parsons, Shinn, Shellhorne,Compton, Land, Shepherd and Rogers.

On April 18, 1775, the Revolutionary War began. During the presenceof the British Fleet in the Delaware Bay, parties of English cameashore in search of provisions and plundered houses. While a largemajority of the inhabitants were Whigs, there were some Torries whorefused to take part in fighting the British and some of them secretlyassisted the enemy in every possible way. If they were caught, theywere arrested or killed but the temptation of gold induced many tofurnish food and supplies to the enemy. One of the Torries lived inBerrytown and would drive cattle down the "Indian Run Over" (aboveFrazier Glann's) to where the British were waiting in shallops on thebayshore. Somehow, the Whigs found out that this fellow was assistingthe enemy and laid in wait but not before some Torry overheard andwarned him. That night, before he drove the cattle, he buried a chestof silver and gold. Before the night was over, he was killed. Localfolks still search for the treasure but have not found the chest. Afew gold pieces have been found.

In August of 1781 a sharp fight was held in the Maurice River oppositeDallas Ferry (Port Norris). A paper published August 28, 1781,stated: "Last week several refugees were brought to town. They weretaken in Maurice River a few days before by a few Jersey militiacommanded by Capt. James Riggin. The militia were in a shallop whichthe refugees attempted to board when the fight started during whichseveral of the refugees were killed and the rest wounded. There were15 in all. The brunt of the fight was sustained by Capt. Riggin andMr. Petersen. Capt. Riggin killed four or five of the enemy on theirattempt to board. He fired his musket and then made such good use ofthe breech that at the end of the battle, there was little leftbesides the barrel. Petersen was wounded by one of the enemy whothere upon was about finishing him by cleaving his head open with anuplifted broadsword when Petersen's little son shot the man dead.Every refugee not killed was wounded and some desperately."

The grave of Capt. James Riggin may be seen in the West Creek BaptistBurying Ground.

In 1800 Tabor Fagan, a circuit rider, established a brick factorybeside his home in North Port Norris. Mr. Fagan built his home withits hand hewn foundation securely put together with wooden pegs. Thehouse was last owned by a descendant, Mrs. Ida Magee of Millville. The house burned down a few years ago.

Until 1800 bricks were brought from England. The General Assembly ofNJ had fixed the size of common bricks at 9 1/2" x 2 3/4" whichconformed to the size of English bricks. The clay was dug by pick andspade and transported by wheelbarrows to a pit where it was mixed withwater. It was stirred by paddles with two or three horses supplyingthe power. This process took about four hours. When the clay was inthe right condition, it was placed in cast iron forms for anotherdrying period. After that, they were moved to a kiln. Wood was usedto fire the ovens. After being fired for four days and nights, thebricks were cooled and ready for market. Today, in the depression inthe field, pieces of brick may still be found. Many of the brickswere loaded on shallops and freighted out the Maurice River toPhiladelphia. After 1861 the operations at the brick factory werediscontinued due to transporation problems.

After the death of Tabor Fagan, his home was willed to his daughter,Mahala (Compton) who had one daughter, Frances. The balance of theestate was willed to his sons, providing they furnished their sister,Mahala, with fire wood, one barrel of port and one barrel of floureach year.

William Dallas died in 1784 leaving his property to his son Jonathanwho operated the ferry for many years. Jonathan Dallas becameacquainted with a wealthy coffee merchant from Philadelphia namedJoseph "Coffee" Jones. Coffee Jones was quite interested inpurchasing Dallas Ferry. In 1810 the purchase was completed. Jonesrenamed the village "Port Norris" in honor of his oldest son, NorrisJones.

"Greetings! We heard that he was in the Revolutionary war based onthe obituary of Nathan Taylor Stratton in 1887 and later his son's (Edward L. Stratton ) obituary in 1916. We sent for his war records anumber of years ago. He was from Woolwich township, GloucesterCounty, NJ. He enlisted in 1777 for 3 years. The records showed thathe deserted on September 9, 1778. That would be soon after theBattles of Brandywine and Germantown. He was in Forman's Regimentunder John Combs. We were surprised to see the word deserted, becausewe were hoping that my wife and daughters could become members of theDAR through him. We did find another ancestor that was a veteran ofthe Revolutionary War. I recently received the followinginformation about Thomas Riley from Trinity Episcopal Church ( OldSwede's Church ) in Swedesboro, NJ. "I have a Thomas Riley born inIreland 1750. Mary (wife) who was daughter of Gabriel and (nameunknown) String, who was deceased. She was born in 1751. Theirchildren were Elisa born May 1774, Mary born 1776, Marget born August1781 and Thomas born Feb 1787. On another page it notes a ThomasRiley was interred (doesn’t say where) on Jan. 11, 1796. In 1803 aWilliam Riley was interred on April 21. It notes he was the brotherof Thomas & Charles Riley and was 40 years of age at that time."

"I would be interested in finding out any further information abouthim, particularly the circumstances of his desertion. If you knowanyone else that may have information about him, it would be greatlyappreciated."

He says that Joseph was for many years Clerk of the Court of CommonPleas, a member of the Legislature 1710 and 1713 and Brigadier-Generalof the militia. Washington appointed him collector of Customs for thedistrict of Barmstable, an office which he held for many years. He deserted but being an invalid and unable tostand up straight, no effort was made to secure his return to thearmy. Colonel Otis was instructed to have him arrested as adeserter---. Bill however on his way home passed the house of ColonelOtis who at the time with some of his neighbors, was standing in hisyard. One of them said "There comes Bill Blatchford!" General Notes: From Memoir of Samuel Endicott:

John Endicott (1739-1816), of the fifth generation from the Governor(who stood some six feet, two inches in height), was a man of athleticbuild and of a strong, sturdy character. After the death of his fatherin 1783, he owned the Orchard Farm, where he lived with his seven sonsand five daughters until they left home or were married. He was a truesportsman and had brought up his children to be competent,self-reliant, and accustomed, as he was, to outdoor life whether onland or sea. At the time of the American Revolution, when the Danvers
Company was called out April 19, 1775, John Endicott was out fishingin the bay and only arrived in Danvers after the Troop, i.e., theTroop of Horsemen, had left for Lexington. He saddled his horse androde off at once to join the Company, but soon came back, as he hadnot gone far before he met the soldiers returning. When only fouryears old his daughter Elizabeth, who lived to be one hundred years, one month and six days old, remembered well how handsome her fatherlooked in his uniform when he left home and how many tears her mothershed. Heart and soul in sympathy with the Colonists in theirdetermination to free themselves from British rule, he took an activepart in the Revolution. In 1778, Washington had directed GeneralSullivan to call upon the New England militia for a campaign againstNewport and its defences. Little seems to be known regarding theexperiences of John Endicott in the Revolutionary War except that hewas at Tiverton, Rhode Island, from August until November, 1778.

His wife, Martha (Putnam) Endicott, was "a woman of great purity ofcharacter, of blameless life and conversation," and was honoured andrevered by her children to an extraordinary degree. "By her amiabledeportment, kindly feelings and gentle bearing she won the esteem ofall who knew her." After her husband's death in 1816, she moved toSalem and lived in the house of her son Samuel, until her death in1821.

WINN'S OF LIBERTY COUNTY, GEORGIA, WINN-L@rootsweb.com, Monday, August30, 1999 5:25 PM, Hi All,
Years ago, someone gave me several pages of information by Theo Norman
Winn. I know that this is long but thought I would send it along inthe
hopes that it might help somebody. I know there are punctuation errors
but I've tried to enter it here just as it was on my copy.

The History of the WINNS of LIBERTY COUNTY, GEORGIA, from April, 1755
When JOHN WINN and Family moved to MIDWAY and NEWPORT in GEORGIA
To
January 1st, 1903, Being Nearly One Hundred and Forty-eight Years
By
THEO NORMAN WINN
The WYNNS are a very ancient family and are the direct descendents of
"Gragnynette" one of the Princeses of Wales of the 11th and 12thCentury
- he left two sons, "Mercrad" and "Griffith".
This information was given me by Dr. W.W. Abbott, of Boston, Mass.,
(Dr. Abbots mother was a Winn), who visited Wales in 1890 and foundthe
record and also visited Sir Wm. Winn and saw the monuments of the WINN
family -- one an officer killed at the Battle of Waterloo.
The arms of the family are three bald eagles on a shield and theWINN'S
name and arms are duly recorded in the College of Heralds and appears
also in Burke's lists of the Peers of England in the British Musuem of
London -- one of two names was in the Cabinets of her Majesty Queen
Victoria under the Liberals of which Sir Wm. E. Gladstone was the
Premier.
Major General A.S. Wynne, C.B. was a distinguished officer in the late
war with the Boers and Lord Newborough of Wales who recently married
Miss Grace Carr of Louisville, Ky., is or was Sir Wm. Charles Wynn, now
Baron of England and Ireland; the Fourth in line from Sir Thomas Winn
created Peer of Ireland in 1776 whose line of descent is traced to one
of the name knighted for valor at the Battle of Norwich in 1549.
The Winn, Wynnes and Wynns have all sprung from the same "Gragnynette"
and the name spelt differently by being Anglicised from the Welchfirst
Gagnoren?.
In 1630, Edward Winn and family came with others to Boston, Mass., and
settled at Dorchester, Mass., from him all the Winns have sprung.
One of his daughters married Moses Cleveland, a great grandfather of
Ex.-Pres. Grover Cleveland, who has confirmed this by a personalletter
to me.
The history of this Edward Winn and his family is given in the History
of Woolum,(Woburn) Mass., where some of the name still reside. Two ofhis
sons fought in the Battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill in the
Revolutionary War. There was a John Winn who disappeared from the
family.
Rev. Mr. Cleveland, the historian of the Cleveland Family, writes me
and concurs with me in the view that the John Winn of Virginia and the
John Winn of South Carolina and the John Winn of Georgia are branchesof
the same parent stock and in this view Dr. John F. Winn of Richmond,
Va., concurs. There are three - nay four branches of the "Winns", vis:
First, the Winns of Mass.; Second, the Winns of Virginia; Third, the
Winns of Kentucky; Fourth, the Winn of South Carolina and Fifth, the
Winns of Georgia. All who spell their name alike, besides the name
"Wynne" and "Wynn" appear in Virginia, North Carolina and in Georgia.
Winnboro is named for General Richard Winn in South Carolina and there
is "Winn Parish" in Louisiana. This General Richard Winn was fromSouth
Carolina and came originally from Virginia. (See Rainey's History of
S.C. and Jones' History of Georgia), and was a contemporary of General
Marion, Sumter and Pinckney. I believe that he was a brother of John
Winn, Sr., as the latter went to the High Hills of the Santee, S.C.when
he left Georgia in 1778.
The "MIDWAY" records show that John Winn and Family came April 15th,
1775. This John Winn, Sr., seems to have been a man of note and
character as I find him one of the delegates to the ProvincialCongress
in Savannah and he was also one of those proscribed and his estates
confiscated by the Royal Proclamation of George III. (See White's
History of Colonia Ga., page 1). He died presumably in South Carolina
as no locality is given in the record of his death. "John Winn, Esq.,
Feb. 8th, 1781" and the records of the Society show that many went to
South Carolina after the fall of Sunbury in 1778 and did not return
until 1782 and as my grandfather John Winn (Major John Winn) was bornat
Black River, South Carlina, and his sister, Anna Winn at the HighHills
of the Santee, I thus think, respectively, I am lead to believe hedied
and was buried there as no trace of his monument exists in Liberty
County, Georgia.
Among the lists of five baptized in South Carolina, I find John, sonof
Peter and Mary Winn, Jan. 6th, 1780. This Peter Winn was a son of John
and Sarah Winn born December 25th, 1750, and was his grandson - theson
of John Winn, Sr. with this data I will now proceed to trace out
chronologically the History of the Winns of Liberty County.
There are four distinct branches of the Winn of Liberty County but
before proceeding I will complete the record of John Winn, Sr.
The following extract was taken from the family Bible of my
grandfather, Major John Winn, compared with the records of the births,
marriages and deaths of the Midway Records and found to be correct."My
father's first marriage (Peter Winn) was with Miss Mary Farley,January
7th, 1777. My father married my mother, Miss Mary Osgood January 8th,
1779."
Benjamin Farley born Sept. 20th, 1777, was the son of Peter Winn and
Mary Farley Winn.
John was born December 4th, 1779, on Black River, South Carolina.
Anna was born June 19th, 1782, High Hills of Santee, South Carolina.
Mary was born at Midway, Georgia, October 29th, 1784. Peter Farley was
born December 5th, 1786.
The third marriage of Peter Winn was with Anna Oswald (Note: there issome conflict
on the name of this wife. Many sources say she was Nancy Ann Sumner.Perhaps she married first a
man named Oswald or perhaps Anna Oswald was a fourth wife.. It is hardto explain why the first two children
had middle name "Sumner" otherwise. FEMIV)
and the children of this marriage were:
1st. Elizabeth Sumner Winn born April 2nd, 1790
2nd Thomas Sumner Winn born July 16th, 1792
3rd Abial born September 9th, 1784
4th Sarah born July 18th, 1797
5th Washington born October 28th, 1798
6th Anna Oswald born July 31st, 1803.

Benjamin Farley Winn died Oct. 14th, 1777.

Peter Winn, Father of these children died Feb. 26th, 1824
