256. William Hodgkinson, son of George Hodgkinson and Katherine, was born on 20 Jul 1696 in Pinxton, Derby, England and died on 4 Jan 1792 in Annesley, Nottinghamshire, England at age 95.

General Notes: Felley is a hamlet and extra parochial liberty of 300 acres, partlyupon a lofty eminence, one and a half miles west by south of Annesley. Here anciently stood a priory, which was founded soon after theConquest by Raddulph Britto. It was dedicated to the Blessed VirginMary, and was subordinate to the priory of Worksop. In 1260 Jeffrey deLangley gave to the priory and canons here his whole land in Knover oncondition that his and his wife's name should be daily mentioned inthe mass, and every year one mass should be celebrated with Placeboand Derige on the day of his death, and thirteen poor people should befed and have a white loaf, a good mess, and a flagon of ale. At itsdissolution it was valued at £40 19s 1d. Nothing now remains of themonastic building, except what is incorporated into the large housewhich is partly occupied by a farmer, whose garden occupies the siteof the chapel. The priory farm was purchased by the late John MustersEsq., of a Mr Hodgkinson, who had bought it of the Holdens

The area of Felley, sometimes spelled Felly, covers approximately 300acres of land, about one and a half miles south west of Annesley, andabout one mile (or less) north east of Underwood.

It is identified by the boundaries of Millington Springs to the north,Bagthorpe Common to the west, William Wood to the east, and FelleyMill found in the very southern point.

Felly was originally the site of an Augustinian Priory which wasfounded by Raddulph Britto shortly after the Norman Conquest. It wasattached to Worksop Priory, and was dedicated to the Blessed VirginMary.

At the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII,it was valued at £40 9s 1d. The building was demolished, except for asmall part which was incorporated into a farmhouse built on the site;the garden of which was located on the site of the chapel. Furtherinformation on this building and its gardens can be found on theAshfield District Council website. The Gardens are open to the publicat certain times.

Because it was originally religious land, Felley was considered"extra-parochial", or outside any church parish. This meant that anyoccupants of the area were free to worship in any surrounding parish.See the map of surrounding parishes for further information.

Felley Mill is located south of Felley Abbey, in the very corner ofthe extra-parochial area, and where Annesley, Selston and Greasleymeet. In the 1841 census, Felley Mill was enumerated as part ofMoorgreen. Felley Mill was immortalised in D. H. Lawrence's book "TheWhite Peacock", where he changed its name to "Strelley Mill".

Birth Notes: Event Description: Pilsley

General Notes: Caretaker at Annesley Hall for the Chaworth family.

BEGINNINGS: The ANNESLEY (original spelling) surname began in a smallvillage 10 miles NW of the city of Nottingham in the English county ofNottingham. The village ANNESLEY was named for a Celtic chieftainnamed "Anna" who owned a meadow ("lea" in old English); thus, "Anna's-lea". Levinot was the last SAXON Lord to hold Annesley. As a rewardfor their part in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, one Norman family,Ralph Fitz-Hubert was given the village and surrounding lands. Indeed,he acquired several villages/lands in NOTTS. Ralpe Brito de Annesleymanaged the property at ANNESLEY for Ralph Fitz-Hubert. It has beenreported that Ralpe Brito de Annesley had traveled to England withFitz-Hubert, who had accompanied William, the Conqueror, in the Battleof Hastings. Eventually, this family took up the name de ANNESLEY,which was eventually anglicized to ANNESLEY. Over time, a fine Englishmanor house was built. called ANNESLEY HALL. This property served asthe seat of the Annesley family from about 1068 until about 1442 whenAlice de Annesley married Sir George Chaworth (from another old Normanfamily). Thus, the Chaworths occupied the property until about 1805when Mary Ann Chaworth married John "Jack" Musters and the family tookon the name Chaworth-Musters (Mary Ann brought considerable wealthinto the marriage). Descendants of this family occupied the Hall until1974 when Major Robert P. Chaworth-Musters moved 1 mile west to FelleyPriory (built by Ralpe Brito de Annesley in 1156). Annesley Hall & thesurrounding acreage have been sold several times without anysignificant change in the use of the property (attended only by acaretaker). Immediately adjacent to the manor house is Old AnnesleyChurch with graveyard. It is owned and protected by a local historicalsociety. NEW Annesley (all-saints) Church lies about a mile NE and wasbuilt in 1874. Many artifacts from the old church are now displayed in"new" Annesley church, including an 11th century Norman font. NoAnnesley family members are known to reside in this area today.

Hello again Bea

Also read further emails from Harman Clark dated July 26.

Robert G. Moore notes read
...there is some evidence that William Sharp's first marriage was toLydia Robins daughter of Daniel Robin/Robinds and Hope Potter (N.J.Will of Daniel Robins dated 22 June 1714 and proven 18 August 1714.The will names among his children
"Lydia wife of Wm Therp of Woodbridge").

On July 27, 1998, Harman Clark writes:

Bob -- I was just looking over the Holder file you sent to me and amreminded that Joseph B. Sutton's mother was Mary Adams, daughter ofThomas Adams and Rebecca Potter.
The Lydia Robins suggested by Lee as the first wife of William Sharp,Jr., was the daughter of Daniel Robins and Hope Potter (Rebecca'ssister). That would make Lydia Robins the first cousin of Mary Adams. Of course that doesn't prove
anything, as most of these early Woodbridge, NJ people were related toeach other , but it is curious.

John Denn, several years before his death, made application to theLegislature of New Jersey for a law for him to dig a canal across thebottle of the meadow that he owned in Lower Penn's Neck, opposite hisplantation in Mannington. The greater part of said meadow formerlybelonged to William Penn. James Logan sold it to James Whitten, theformer owner of the meadow, in 1712. He likewise had the power tocontract the creek as soon as the canal became navigable. The law wasobtained, and he soon afterwards commenced operations. After the canalwas completed sufficiently for navigation, it was not of the capacityof the creek for draining the low lands and the large tracts of meadowthat lay above the mouth of the canal, consequently the meadows weregreatly damaged by not having sufficient fall of water, as great asformerly, before the creek was contracted, accordingly there was agreat opposition by the proprietors of land above said canal. Meetingswere called to devise some plan to prevent him from proceeding anyfurther in his operations. They insisted he should remove theobstruction he had already made in the creek, but he continued firm inhis undertakings, taking the precaution to keep within the limits ofthe law. He built a bridge across the creek for his own accommodationuntil such time as the canal would wear sufficiently to vent the waterabove, so it would not be any great detriment to the meadows. Afterfifty years or more there is now a permanent dam and road across thecreek where his bridge was formerly. Therefore his plans and motiveshave been fulfilled, notwithstanding he did not live to see it allcompleted on account of his great age. At his death he was more thanfourscore.

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

"Since his father and grandfather Perry had arrived in the New Worldonly three years before his birth, this young John may be thought ofas the first American Perry in his line. Very little is known aboutthis man who was the ancestor of a large branch of the family, but hedoubtless lived out his life in Watertown, and vicinity, probably as afarmer; whether he engaged in the family trade of cloth weaving andtailoring is not known. ...
The facts of the life of John Perry (IV) are to be found mostly invarious church and town records since no connected account has so farbeen found. The following excerpts are evidence that Mr. Perry'ssecond wife was Mercy Swan, contrary to the statements of earliergenealogists that Sarah Price was his only wife, and that he had landat Cambridge Rocks....." "Mr. Otis rose to be a man of great distinction and influence, ofsuperior genius, but more indebted to the native energy of his mindthan to a regular education, for the acquirements he possessed. Thesimplicity of the life and times is shown by the fact that accidentalcircumstances led him to engage in the legal profession. On oneoccasion when he was at Court in Barnstable, a neighbor, who had acase pending, was unprovided with counsel, and solicited his aid. Heconsented to act, and managed the case with such ability as to receivethe strong encomiums of the court, and appreciative friends inducedhim to study for the profession of the law, in which he soon acquireda commanding position. His study of the principles of law, asconnected with political institutions, had prepared him for a clearperception of the effects that would have resulted from the executionof the ministerial plans agains the colonies, and he ardently engagedin asserting their rights. He was elected a member of the provinciallegislature in 1758, made Speaker of the House in 1760, and continuedin that office for two years, when he was negatived by Gov. Bernard.

"He was, among his other positions, also Colonel of the militia. Adocument is given in 'Barstable Families,' Vol. II. pg. 42, ordering atroop of horse in the County of Barnstable, Aug. 14, 1757, to whichhis name is signed as 'Coll'n of st. Regiment."

"In 1763 he was appointed Judge of Probate for Barnstable county, andChief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, Feb. 1764, and hecontinued at the head of that court until the Revolution. The sameyear he was again chosen Speaker of the House, and also one of hisMajesty's Council, but was negatived by the Governor, owing to hisopposition to the measures of the government. He was elected into theCouncil every succeeding yer, and was negatived as regularly aschosen, until 1770, when Lieut. Col. Hutchinson approbated the choser.Mr. Otis sat at the Council board during the first years of the war;he was president and oldest member of that body. From the departure ofGage and the adoption of the state constitution, he exercised duringthat period the functions of chief executive magistrate of Mass.

"He served on many committees of the legislature during the periodfrom 1760-1775, which reported some of the most remarkable of thosesincere and masterly state papers which were produced during theperiod preceding the epoch of the American Revolution. His name hasbeen frequently mentioned in terms of high esteem, as a compeer withAdams, Quincy and Hancock

General Notes:

Note: "She was a woman of great energy of character. It is related of
her, on the day of the battle of Bunker Hill, that Col. TimothyPickering halted his company for a few minutes near the South MeetingHouse, Danvers, and such was her impatience at this delay, that shewalked up to the commander and said, 'Why on earth don't you march;don't you hear the guns at Charlestown?'" (NEHG Register 1:337)

From Memoir of Samuel Endicott:

Elizabeth (Jacobs) Endicott, was a woman of high principle, of unusualfirmness and energy of character, of intelligent mind, and of a
tall and commanding presence. In early life she must have had muchbeauty, for she was always considered remarkably handsome andattracted attention wherever she went. She died in 1809 at the age ofninety-one. She knew men and women who had known Governor Endecott, and related to her children and grandchildren many events about theearly Colonial days which, unfortunately, have not been transmitted toher descendants. On the day of the battle of Bunker Hill when ColonelTimothy
Pickering had halted his company for a few minutes near the SouthMeeting House, South Danvers, such was her impatience at any delaythat she walked up to him and said: "Why on earth don't you march;don't you hear the guns at Charlestown?" Undoubtedly she left as alegacy to her many descendants her frank, outspoken ways, for shealways said what she thought and had no sentimental delusions aboutanybody or anything. When her brother, Daniel Jacobs, agedninety-five, confided to her that he contemplated matrimony with acertain widow; she looked at him in amazement, and said: "Why DanielJacobs! you had better be thinking of your grave." In the latergenerations of the Endicott family there have been remarkableinstances of longevity, particularly in the female lines, and it is afair
presumption that this "length of days" is an inheritance fromElizabeth (Jacobs) Endicott.

MARRIAGE: Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Film #0761323

From the seven sons of Peter2 have descended all of the Shumways found in
this country.

Removed from Topsfield, Mass. to Oxford, Mass. about 1714.

One of the first "voted in" inhabitants of the town of Oxford, MA.

Oxford was a settlement in the heart of the so called "Nipmuck Country"
which Oliver Wendell Holmes called "the second colony of the Pilgri mFathers"
Several books have been written about this area and time.

Will was presented for probate before Judge Joseph Wilder, Worchester,
Mass. on Sep. 17, 1751.

His will indicates that he had a second wife but no entry has been found
in either town or church records to prove this.

Even though Peter II, first-born of Peter "the soldier" and FrancesShumway had three brothers and one sister, he was the only one to passon the family name. His seven sons, however, greatly augmented theShumway genes pool by producing offspring too numerous for me to counthere.

Sometime after the Soldier's death in Boxford, Massachusetts thefamily seems to have split up. The widow Frances with son Samuel musthave moved three or four miles to Topsfield for it was here that, in1714, she made her last will and testament signing it:
her
Francies X Shumway
mark
Peter stayed in Boxford, probably on the family farm, with his wifeand children. His brother Joseph moved to Topsfield and apparentlynever married, for no wife nor children were mentioned in his will.Their sister Dorcas married Valentine Butler and later, HenryWhittingham, and between these two marriages produced three children.

Brother John moved from Boxford to Oxford, an abandoned settlementabout 75 miles southwest. Quite a distance in colonial times. Heprobably joined Peter and family who pulled up stakes from Boxford in1714.

Oxford was originally called "New Oxford" and was to have beencolonized in 1686 by thirty French Protestant families who promised todevelop the new colony. Well, not all thirty showed up, so the littlegroup had a tough time getting started. Hostile Indians didn't helpmuch, either. When in 1696 after
repeated raids through the years, the Indians attacked and killednearly the whole family of one of the settlers, the rest of them threwin the towel and left for Boston.

So the village stayed empty for sixteen years, when it got resettledby about thirty new families including Peter and his brood. Oxford (bynow the "New" had been dropped) apparently prospered as the Shumwaysstayed on and the family kept growing until goodwife Maria hadpresented Peter with nine children. Maria was Maria SMITH in Boxford, until her marriage into the Shumway family in about 1700. She died in1738 in Oxford at age 60.

Peter lasted another thirteen years and apparently remarried, for inhis will drawn in 1741 he not only generously endowed all of hisoffspring, including our ancestor, Jacob, but he left his "belovedwife Mary" among other things, the use of one room and the cellar inhis house for as long as she would need it. Oh, yes, he left her a"milch cow" too.

Much is written about Peter Shumway, son of the man known as Peter thesoldier, in Asahel Adams Shumways' book. Of his siblings Peter is theonly one seemingly to have produced children and therefore allShumways are believed to be descended from his seven sons. Accordingto Mr. A.A. Shumway, Peter left Topsfield, MA and removed to Oxfordabout 1714.

Peter was one of the founders of Oxford, Massachusetts. He was one ofthirty heads of family who settled Oxford in 1714.

Peter II and Maria (his wife) and their family migrated to Oxford,Mass., after the parents died in 1714. It is assumed the only onesleft was Dorcus and her family in the Boxford area. There is nofurther record of her and family. The brothers, Samuel and Joseph wereburried there.

Oxford was in the heart of the Nipmuck Country, named after theNipmuck Indians. In 1646, John Elliot started his missionary effortsas an "Apostle to the Indians." These Indians were not as hostile asthose along the coast. In 1683 a grant of sixty-five square miles wasgiven three men to establish a French Protestant Colony. It does notsay Huguenots, but most of the French Protestants at that time wereHuguenots. The pioneers had a rough time getting started and thequarrelsome Indians came in making things even more difficult. TheIndians finally massacared the Johnson family and those that werestill there left. The massacre took place August 25, 1696.

In 1713 a movement was started to re-settle Oxford again by theEnglish. A grant was made to let thirty families settle the area.Sept. 13, 1713 the thrity families voted to let Peter Shumway come asan inhabitant of Oxford upon the right of Joshua Chandler, one of thethirty.

Peter II's Will is of record. The Will was probated Sept. 17, 1751 atWorchester, Mass. It appears by the Will he had a second wife, Mary.

His oldest son, Oliver, was born May 10, 1701. Peter II moved toTopsfield about 1714, the settlement of Topsfield disappeared, it isthought, because of Indian trouble.

THEO NORMAN WINN

The WYNNS are a very ancient family and are the direct descendents of
"Gragnynette" one of the Princeses of Wales of the 11th and 12thCentury
- he left two sons, "Mercrad" and "Griffith".

This information was given me by Dr. W.W. Abbott, of Boston, Mass.,
(Dr. Abbots mother was a Winn), who visited Wales in 1890 and foundthe
record and also visited Sir Wm. Winn and saw the monuments of the WINN
family -- one an officer killed at the Battle of Waterloo.

The arms of the family are three bald eagles on a shield and theWINN'S
name and arms are duly recorded in the College of Heralds and appears
also in Burke's lists of the Peers of England in the British Musuem of
London -- one of two names was in the Cabinets of her Majesty Queen
Victoria under the Liberals of which Sir Wm. E. Gladstone was the
Premier.

Major General A.S. Wynne, C.B. was a distinguished officer in the late
war with the Boers and Lord Newborough of Wales who recently married
Miss Grace Carr of Louisville, Ky., is or was Sir Wm. Charles Wynn, now
Baron of England and Ireland; the Fourth in line from Sir Thomas Winn
created Peer of Ireland in 1776 whose line of descent is traced to one
of the name knighted for valor at the Battle of Norwich in 1549.

The Winn, Wynnes and Wynns have all sprung from the same "Gragnynette"
and the name spelt differently by being Anglicised from the Welchfirst
Gagnoren?.

In 1630, Edward Winn and family came with others to Boston, Mass., and
settled at Dorchester, Mass., from him all the Winns have sprung.

One of his daughters married Moses Cleveland, a great grandfather of
Ex.-Pres. Grover Cleveland, who has confirmed this by a personalletter
to me.

The history of this Edward Winn and his family is given in the History
of Woolum,(?) Mass., where some of the name still reside. Two of his
sons fought in the Battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill in the
Revolutionary War. There was a John Winn who disappeared from the
family.

Rev. Mr. Cleveland, the historian of the Cleveland Family, writes me
and concurs with me in the view that the John Winn of Virginia and the
John Winn of South Carolina and the John Winn of Georgia are branchesof
the same parent stock and in this view Dr. John F. Winn of Richmond,
Va., concurs. There are three - nay four branches of the "Winns", vis:
First, the Winns of Mass.; Second, the Winns of Virginia; Third, the
Winns of Kentucky; Fourth, the Winn of South Carolina and Fifth, the
Winns of Georgia. All who spell their name alike, besides the name
"Wynne" and "Wynn" appear in Virginia, North Carolina and in Georgia.
Winnboro is named for General Richard Winn in South Carolina and there
is "Winn Parish" in Louisiana. This General Richard Winn was fromSouth
Carolina and came originally from Virginia. (See Rainey's History of
S.C. and Jones' History of Georgia), and was a contemporary of General
Marion, Sumter and Pinckney. I believe that he was a brother of John
Winn, Sr., as the latter went to the High Hills of the Santee, S.C.when
he left Georgia in 1778.

The "MIDWAY" records show that John Winn and Family came April 15th,
1775. This John Winn, Sr., seems to have been a man of note and
character as I find him one of the delegates to the ProvincialCongress
in Savannah and he was also one of those proscribed and his estates
confiscated by the Royal Proclamation of George III. (See White's
History of Colonia Ga., page 1). He died presumably in South Carolina
as no locality is given in the record of his death. "John Winn, Esq.,
Feb. 8th, 1781" and the records of the Society show that many went to
South Carolina after the fall of Sunbury in 1778 and did not return
until 1782 and as my grandfather John Winn (Major John Winn) was bornat
Black River, South Carlina, and his sister, Anna Winn at the HighHills
of the Santee, I thus think, respectively, I am lead to believe hedied
and was buried there as no trace of his monument exists in Liberty
County, Georgia.

Among the lists of five baptized in South Carolina, I find John, sonof
Peter and Mary Winn, Jan. 6th, 1780. This Peter Winn was a son of John
and Sarah Winn born December 25th, 1750, and was his grandson - theson
of John Winn, Sr. with this data I will now proceed to trace out
chronologically the History of the Winns of Liberty County.

There are four distinct branches of the Winn of Liberty County but
before proceeding I will complete the record of John Winn, Sr.

The following extract was taken from the family Bible of my
grandfather, Major John Winn, compared with the records of the births,
marriages and deaths of the Midway Records and found to be correct."My
father's first marriage (Peter Winn) was with Miss Mary Farley,January
7th, 1777. My father married my mother, Miss Mary Osgood January 8th,
1779."

Benjamin Farley born Sept. 20th, 1777, was the son of Peter Winn and
Mary Farley Winn.

John was born December 4th, 1779, on Black River, South Carolina.

Anna was born June 19th, 1782, High Hills of Santee, South Carolina.

Mary was born at Midway, Georgia, October 29th, 1784. Peter Farley was
born December 5th, 1786.

The third marriage of Peter Winn was with Anna Oswald and the children
of this marriage were:
1st. Elizabeth Sumner Winn born April 2nd, 1790
2nd Thomas Sumner Winn born July 16th, 1792
3rd Abial born September 9th, 1784
4th Sarah born July 18th, 1797
5th Washington born October 28th, 1798
6th Anna Oswald born July 31st, 1803.

483. Ann* Duvall,2 daughter of Lewis* Duvall 2 and Martha Ridgely,2 was born on 23 Sep 1709 in South River Parish, Anne Arundel, Maryland2 and died on 5 Aug 1761 in Liberty Co., GA2 at age 51.

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

Ann Duvall, daughter of Judge Lewis Duvall and Martha Ridgely hiswife, was the last Duvall to be born at "Middle Plantation." Hermother died shortly after her birth, and her care was no doubtentrusted to the devotion and loyalty of the negro slaves of thehousehold. After 1718 she accompanied her two sisters to SouthCarolina where she joined her father. On September 3, 1728, shemarried in South Carolina Joseph Way. With her marriage Annrelinquished her orthodox religious tradition, for she intermarriedinto one of the Puritan families which had come down from Dorchester,Mass., about 1690 and settled ten miles up the Ashley River at a placenow included in Dorchester County. By that time the Dorchesterians hadembraced Congregationalism and Ann's son, Joseph, was baptized intothe "Independent Society in Dorchester."
In 1734 her husband and George Barnett made a trip to Maryland inorder to dispose of "Middle Plantation" and other land holdings whichhe had acquired by his marriage, but the former was apparently unableto break the entail. He returned to South Carolina where
he subsequently died.

After the death of her husband the widow married secondly ThomasSacheverell by whom she had one son John. She survived her secondhusband and as a widow she married thirdly John Winn, by whom she hada daughter Catherine. In or about 1753 with her husband, John Winn, and family, she joined a large group of the DorchesterCongregationalist which migrated to the Province of Georgia, settlingin St. John's Parish.
In 1757 John Winn was made a commissioner for the district betweenMedway River and South Newport including certain sea islands.1 In May1759 he was granted 350 acres in St. John's Parish, and on April 24,1760, he was commissioned by the Colonial Legislature to erect fortswithin the parish.1

Ann (Duvall) Way-Sacheverell-Winn died on August 5, 1761, in Georgia, and as there is no record of her husband's death, it is not knownwhether he survived or not. He was most likely deceased by 1761, whenJoseph Way took steps to establish his claims to "Middle Plantation,"for if he were living at that time he would have had a life interestin his widow's estate.
As her son and heir, Joseph Way 2d, attained his majority and with thedeath of his Aunt Martha, he became the sole proprietor of "MiddlePlantation" which had suffered from an absentee land owner, save forthe period Martha Duvall was in Maryland, for 43 years. At Savannahbefore coming North to claim his birthright he gathered fiveinteresting and enlightening depositions from family friends who hadknown his honoured grandfather when he first arrived in South Carolinafrom Maryland.

On September 5, 1761, with the authority of James Wright, Esq.,Lieut.-Colonel and Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty's Colony ofGeorgia, he, as Joseph Way of the Parish of St. John in the Colony ofGeorgia, Planter, issued power of attorney to Nicholas Maccubin andJames Maccubin, of Annapolis, Merchants, to "ask demand sue forrecover & Receive all & every such sum and sums of money, Debts, Rents& arrears of Rent & Yearly Payments . . . particularly one tract ofland called The Middle Plantation and in my name . . . dock entail inthe High Court of Chancery." The instrument was witnessed by JohnStacy and John Sacheverell, of St. John's Parish, the latter beingidentified as his brother uterine.2
On September 1, 1761, Robert Miller, aged 64, of St. John's Parish,Colony of Georgia, made a deposition to the effect that he rememberedLewis Duvall, late of South Carolina, and recalled his coming fromMaryland and settling in South Carolina in 1716 or thereabouts. Thathe sent for his daughters from Maryland who arrived and were "receivedby the said Lewis Duvall as his Daughters," their names being Martha,Susannah, and Ann. And that he often heard Duvall say that he had atract of land in Maryland, and that he died in South Carolina in 1724,as did his daughter Susannah who never married. About 1730 his eldestdaughter, Martha Duvall, returned to Maryland. He furthermore deposedthat he was intimately acquainted with Ann Duvall who was lawfullymarried in South Carolina about 1728 to Joseph Way by whom she had twochildren then living - Elizabeth and Joseph aged about 23 who is thepresent Joseph Way, the son and heir of his mother. Joseph Way Sr.went to Maryland about 1734, but died in South Carolina after hisreturn. His widow married secondly Thomas Sacheverell by whom she hadone son who was then living named John Sacheverell. After the death ofSacheverell the widow married thirdly John Winn by whom she had onedaughter then living named Catherine Winn. They removed to Georgiaabout eight years ago, where she (Ann Winn) died in August 1761.

On September 1, 1761, likewise, John Quarterman, aged 59, late ofSouth Carolina but then of St. John's Parish, Colony of Georgia, sworethat near 41 years ago he knew Lewis Duvall in South Carolina who camefrom Maryland and that he also knew Martha and Ann Duvall whom "thesaid Lewis Duvall owned as his Daughters and Supported them as suchtill his Death which Happened sometime in or about 1724 after whichhis daughter Martha returned to Maryland and his Daughter Ann wasLawfully Married to Joseph Way in South Carolina in or about 1728where this Deponent was at the Wedding of the said Joseph and Ann bywhom she the said Ann had two Children now living Elizabeth and JosephWay his son and heir." That the father of Joseph Way Jr. went toMaryland about some land which came by his wife and that he came backand died in South Carolina. Then his widow married Thomas Sacheverellby whom she had one son then living named John. After the death ofThomas Sacheverell she married John Winn by whom she had a daughternamed Catherine. That Ann Winn removed to Georgia where she died inAugust 1761
Edward Way, aged 45, but no stated relationship to Joseph Way Sr.,deposed that he knew Ann Duvall, daughter of Lewis Duvall of Maryland, and about 1728 she married Joseph Way by whom she had two children andthat Joseph Way, aged 23, was her son and heir. That Joseph Way,father of Joseph Jr., went to Maryland about 1734 relative to someland that came by his wife in order to sell but understood that he didnot sell the land but returned to South Carolina where he died, andthen his wife married Thomas Sacheverell.

Sarah Golding, late of South Carolina but then of Georgia, aged 59,swore that she knew Lewis Duvall upward 41 years and that she knewperfectly well that he came from Maryland to South Carolina where shethen lived. He sent to Maryland for his children and that Martha,Susannah, and Ann Duvall arrived in South Carolina and wereacknowledged by him as his children until his death about 1724. Hisdaughter Susannah who never married died in South Carolina. After herdeath, Martha the eldest daughter returned to Maryland where sheremained and died as she understood, for her wearing apparel was sentto South Carolina to her sister Ann Duvall who received them. Shefurthermore declared that she had been intimately acquainted with AnnDuvall who married Joseph Way about 1728. That she married Joseph Wayand that the "present Joseph Way who has signed his Name at the footof this Deposition is the son and heir of the aforesaid Joseph Way whomarried Ann Duvall Daughter of the said Lewis Duvall for she thisDeponent has seen him the said Joseph sucking at the said Ann'sbreast." That Ann with her husband John Winn removed to Georgia abouteight years ago where she died on August 5, last.

Sarah Jeanes, of Sunbury, Georgia, late of South Carolina, aged 61years, swore on September 2, 1761, that she knew Lewis Duvall who camefrom Maryland and his servant, John Elders, whom he brought with himfrom Maryland. After the death of Lewis Duvall and his daughterSusannah, Martha the eldest daughter went to Maryland about 1730 tocut the entailment of a tract of land that belonged to her father andto sell the same, and that she expected to be assisted by her"Grandfather in Law the Reverend Jacob Henderson of that ProvinceMaryland." By letters that he (Henderson) had sent from Maryland toAnn Duvall who also received a trunk of the wearing apparell of hersister Martha who died in Maryland ..... that Ann Duvall was lawfullymarried in South Carolina on September 3, 1728, by whom she had twochildren . . . Elizabeth and Joseph who was born January 29, 1738 andthat she was present at his birth . . . that Joseph Way husband of AnnDuvall went to Maryland in company with Mr. George Barnett and that hereturned again in South Carolina where he died . . . that Ann Duvallafter the death of her second husband removed into Georgia with herhusband John Winn where she died 5 August 1761."

With the five depositions Joseph Way Jr. also carried with him acertification of his baptism "April 2, 1738 Ann Way's son Joseph wasbaptized dated in Dorchester in South Carolina" as taken from folio 29in a book of the "Records and Proceedings of the Independant Society."All of which were recorded in Maryland on April 30, 1765.

By absenteeism of ownership and the exigencies of the times, theestate was involved and James Maccubin seemed to have held some lien, but on April 26, 1763, a tripartite deed was executed by "Joseph Waynow of Anne Arundel but late of Georgia grandson and heir at-law ofLewis Duvall formerly of Anne Arundel County" of the first part, JamesMaccubin of Anne Arundel Merchant of the second part, and ZachariahHood of Anne Arundel County Merchant of the third part, whereas JamesMaccubin recovered by a decree of the High Court of Chancery andJoseph Way likewise recovered over in value against the commonvouchee, consequently Joseph Way for £250 conveyed his equity toZachariah Hood of all that tract of land lying in Anne Arundel calledMiddle Plantation containing 600 acres.

Two days later he conveyed to Zachariah Hood for £30 "Duvall'sPasture" adjoining "Burgess' Choice" and lying on the north side ofthe north Branch of the Patuxent River in the woods and upon a meadowcalled Cattaile Meadow and extending to a bound tree of a tract ofland called Middle Plantation, the said tract containing 62 acres withimprovements. No wife waived dower; the witnesses were Thomas Harwoodand Joseph Gaither.4

Genealogical Records of the Lawton Family of S.C.
(Note the copy, located at the D.A.R. Library in Washington, D.D. hasbeen hand numbered and I copied pages 45-47, 55 & 56, and thereferences on pages 63-64).

Joseph Lawton was an exemplary man, contributing to his society inreligious, patriotic, civic and social activities.

He was born on October 18, 1753 on Edisto Island at his father'splantation on what is now called Steamboat Creek. He was the fourthson, the youngest child and the only child born to Captain WilliamLawton by this third wife, Mary Sams, the widow of Paul Grimball1

By the time of Joseph's birth, seventy-three years after the firstpermanent English settlement in South Carolina, Edisto Island hadsettled into the relatively comfortable security of freedom from theSpaniards and of the prosperity brought about by second and thirdgeneration wealth. His inheritance on Edisto Island from his fatherand three half brothers were considerable for the day, and it is notknown what prompted him to come to the wilderness of the Black Swamparea.2 However, he was on Black Swamp before the Revolution, alongwith his Grimball half brothers and sisters. By 1774, he had sold hisEdisto plantation and was acquiring the first of the properties atBlack Swamp, that were to become his Mulberry Grove Plantation.3

Joseph, not quite twenty, married on March 18, 1773, eighteen year oldSarah Robert. As tradition has it, the ceremony was performed atIndianland, or Stoney Creek, that indomitable stronghold of Calvinism, where Sarah's father, Jacques Robert, is said to be buried. Hermother, the former Sarah Jaudon, came on to Robertville subsequently.4

Joseph and Sarah reared seven children to maturity, beginning withWilliam Henry, the eldest, born on February 23, 1775, and ending withThe Reverend Winborn Asa, born on June 23, 1793.5 Each of the sevenchildren deserves special attention, but time prevents telling theinteresting points of their lives.

Sarah's surviving letters and commentaries on her, reflect hereducation, cultured French background and her concern with herfamily, the neighborhood and the church. 6
Sarah's great grandson, Joseph Thomas Robert, in 1878, wrote of her,"she was very intelligent, fond of reading, hospitable, and eminentlypious and exemplary." Mr. Robert said of her father, Jacques Robert,"Her father was a man of culture, well educated and fond of scientificresearches, as we learn from records of philosophical apparatusbelonging to the family. His children were brought up to beintelligent and influential members of society."7

Joseph and Sarah reared their children at Mulberry Grove in atwo-story home that was sufficiently imposing, we learn from Sarah'swill, to have a parlour and other accoutremants.8The summer house, atTranspine, where the family spent its summers hoping to avoid malariaand miasma, could easily be reconstructed from the detailedspecifications in Colonel Alexander J. Lawton's diary.9

In her later years, Sarah was seen through the eyes of a Yankeeschoolteacher as the matriarch of the large Lawton clan, and as thegrand dame of Black Swamp, riding about the countryside in her chair,or chaise. Charlotte Verstille, daughter of the famous miniaturist,William Verstille, had been preceptress of Phillips Andover Academy inMassachusetts before coming to teach the Robertville gentry at thenewly formed Black Swamp Academy, and it is from her descriptiveletters to relatives in the North that we draw this picture ofSarah.10

To Sarah we owe the precedent of the first Lawton family reunion. Itwas held in 1831, almost a century and a half ago, when according toMr. Robert, "Grandmother determined to invite all of her children andgrandchildren then living to meet together at her residence at"Mulberry Grove" and spend a day once more as a family in socialenjoyment." (Now we might know ( this is the end of page 47 )

service record. For example, Dr. James Stoney Lawton simply says thathis grandfather Lawton was an officer in the Revolution;17 GeneralHenry Martyn Robert states that his mother was a granddaughter ofMajor Joseph Lawton of the Revolutionary War;18 while several sketcheswritten of General Alexander Robert Lawton, who lived at MulberryGrove with his grandmother, and who was twenty-one when she died, state that his grandfather, Joseph Lawton, was an officer in theContinental forces.19

Someday, a search of repositories may well prove by primary evidence, that General Lawton knew whereof he wrote. It is unfortunate thatmany records of the Revolution in the National Archives at Washingtonwere burned in the War of 1812 and in another subsequent fire there.Records of many South Carolina soldiers are at the Huntington Libraryat San Marino, California, libraries in Ann Arbor, Michigan, theDraper Library in Wisconsin, and in many other public, institutionaland private collections in the United States.

Many Revolutionary War records are in the South Carolina Archives atColumbia, although considerable South Carolina records of the War wereburned, lost, or placed through various means in other places. Therecords at Columbia prove that Joseph, as a Lieutenant in ColonelStephen Bull's Granville County Regiment of Militia, received fundsfor provisions for a scouting party in May, 1778, and two pay billsprove he commanded the Black Swamp Company of Foot at Two Sister'sFerry from July 5th through July 11, 1778. It is singular andsomewhat ironical that numerous records at Columbia document thelengthy war records of two other Black Swamp officers: Captain WilliamManer and Colonel William Stafford on almost a day-to-day basisthroughout the war.

One story of Joseph's Revolutionary record is of special interest. The Reverend Fred Jones in the 1895 Minutes of the Savannah RiverBaptist Association may have taken inspiration from Parson Weemsaccounts of Washington, Jasper and Marion et. Al, or he may have basedwhat he wrote on documents or tradition passed down by word of mouth. At any rate, the story, written by a non-Lawton, is interesting and weshould be proud to have it. The Reverend Mr. Jones wrote:

During the Revolutionary War, Lawton owed his life to
a British officer, who was once befriended by him.
the officer lost his horse near Mr. Lawton's and
to his surprise, the Whig Lawton, furnished him one,
with the remark, "I am not fighting men, but for
principles". When the Tories betrayed Mr. Lawton
and he was about to be executed by the British, the
officer went to the execution through curiosity, and
on discovering his benefactor, saved his life, with
the expression "Such a man must not be executed."

List of prisoners on Prison Ship "On Board the Schooner Pack Horse"George Mosse

From "Dr. Mosse, Militia Surgeon, Lived Here, Mapped Island" by Rev.Dr. E. H. Peeples in "The Island Packet" of June 29, 1976:

"A trim, versatile young Irish physician, kinsman of the popular Dr.Bartholomew Mosse of Dublin, arrived in Charleston in 1765. He beganpracticing medicine in the Parish of St. Thomas and St. Denis where hemarried Elizabeth Martin in 1767.
Following her death in childbirth he secured a small acreage on St.Helena's Island, resumed his medical practice, opened a large generalstore and established a profitable tannery and leather manufacturingbusiness. His 12-oared barge made monthly deliveries of hismerchandise alternately to Charleston and Savannah, returning withneeded supplies. Several journeymen and apprentices augmented his workforce of slaves. He planted benne from which sesame seeds wereharvested for oil; he planted cane from which he manufactured sugarand distilled rum; he cultivated grapes and made wines commercially.
Dr. Mosse married again in 1771 Phoebe, younger daughter of agingplanter Jonathan Norton. Her sister Sarah was the wife of Samuel Greenof Hilton Head's Fish Haul Plantation and they were frequent visitorshere. They hired a resident male tutor for the seven daughters born tothem, all of whom they raised; there were no sons.
From the 1775 outbreak of the Revolution, Dr. Mosse and Hilton HeadIsland planters were active patriots. The victory at Sullivan's Islandgave the state almost three years of respite from the war. But theDecember 1778 fall of Savannah and the subsequent burning of PrinceWilliam Parish Church by Royal Militiaman, Maj. Andrew Deveaux, hiswife's cousin, brought the war's violence to Beaufort District. By May12, 1780, when Charleston fell, all Georgia and Carolina had been lostthrough the bad judgement and worse military tactics of threeContinental generals: Robert Howe, John Ashe and Benjamin Lincoln.
One more Continental effort was made at Camden by Gen, Horatio Gates;his inefficient supply service left his men so hungry that they ateunripened fruit the day before the battle and were too ill to fight.Dr. Mosse served as a Militia surgeon during the battle and wascaptured by the British who marched him from the Camden battlefield toprison in Charleston.
Upon being paroled Dr. Mosse returned to his family. In May 1781 incontravention of the terms of his parole, the British arrested 129 ofthe leaders of South Carolina and confined them aboard the prisonships "Forbay" and "Pack Horse" in Charleston harbor. Hilton Headlandowner and future South Carolina Governor Benjamin Guerard andplanter William Elliott of Myrtle Bank Plantation, whose wife was aclose cousin of Dr. Mosse's wife, were among those illegally with Dr.Mosse in the stinking, disease-ridden, overcrowded vessels.
Dr. Mosse joined the others in writing on May 18, 1781 to GeneralNathaniel Greene, that 'should it fall to the lot of any or all of usto be made victims aggreable to the menaces herein contained, we haveonly to regret that our blood could not be disposed of more to theadvancement of the glorious cause to which we adhere.'
A general exchange of prisoners was arranged, resulting in Dr. Mosse'sbeing put aboard ship for Philadelphia. As the ship passed the NorthCarolina coast the prisoners overcame their guards, seized control ofthe vessel, and sailed her into port. From there, 'after manyperils,'Dr. Mosse made his way home safely.
In early 1782 Dr. Mosse supplied the South Carloina militaryestablishment with 115 gallons of rum and 300 pounds of 'muscavadosugar' manufactured on his plantation. He became a Hilton Headlandowner, his plantation adjoining that of his business partner andbrother-in-law, the Rev. William E. Graham and nephew Captain WilliamPope.
As the Treaty of Peace was signed in 1783 he was still shipping winefor the use of the Militia. Also in 1783 Dr. Mosse surveyed HiltonHead Island and made a detailed map, complete with names of concurrentproperty owners, dividing most of the island into plantation lots forsale.
Ten years later Dr. Mosse moved his family to Savannah in order toprovide better educational opportunities for his daughters, the eldestof whom had settled there after marrying Captain Patrick McKenzie,Revolutionary soldier from Maryland. His daughter Elizabeth marriedCaptain James Stoney and became mistress of Otterburn Plantation onHilton Head the same year.
In Savannah Dr. Mosse organized the Savannah Medical College and was acharter member of the Georgia Medical Society. In 1795 he became thefirst deacon of Savannah's First Baptist Church which he helpedestablish. But he complained that he 'made no dollars in Savannah'whereas he had 'made pounds sterling on St, Helena's and Hilton Head.'
In May 1806 he bought a plantation at Robertville where several of hisdaughters had settled. There he died Feb. 17, 1808, and his wife sixweeks later. They were buried in the plantation cemetery and the siteof the grave of the Revolutionary War hero is now lost."
