As indicated above James was bound apprentice in the stocking trade atan early age. Several of his sons followed in their father's footstepsand continued in the trade. This penchant for weaving was to betranslated three generations later into the large carpet manufacturingfirm of C. H. Masland & Sons, Rugs and Carpets. The firm grew out ofstocking weaving and yarn dyeing in Philadelphia into a multinationalcorporation which was the largest supplier of automotive carpet in theUnited States in the 1970's and 80's. In 1986 the firm was purchasedby Burlington Industries and is today a part of the gian LearCorporation. The floor covering part of the company still operatesunder the name of Masland Carpets and is headquartered in Atmore,Alabama.
James was a Framework knitter like most of the other residents of theNottingham area in the early 1800's. The stocking frame was about thesize of an upright piano and was a complex piece of machinerycomprised of over 2000 parts. The entire Masland family was engaged inthe production of stockings and lace with the older boys operating theframes and the girls and younger boys spinning yarn. The familybusiness prospered for a while until the Industrial Revoulution beganto change the trade as factory made textiles supplanted hand madecloth. The Nottingham area and Arnold in particular were rocked byriots as the plight of the stockingers grew worse. The Luddite riotsand the "Pentrich Revolution'" were expressions of the frustrationfelt by the framework knitters and touched the Masland family deeply.
The economic conditions in Nottingham were the primary cause why somany of the stocking weavers left the area for greener pastures. Inthe 1830's several of the sons of James Masland joined the military asa way out of the poverty of the times and eventually emigrated toAmerica. The girls left home as servants to some of the wealthyfamilies in the area. In 1849 Alfred Masland, last of the Maslandchildren to leave Arnold, arrived in Philadelphia. Today there are nodescendants of James and Mary Ann Masland left in England.

The Butcher family are of English extraction, Joseph, the father ofthis biographical sketch, having resided in Burlington County, wherehe followed the carpenter's craft, and married Elizabeth Lippincott.Their son, Joseph, was born May 24, 1791. Port Elizabeth was the homeof his boyhood, the scene of his early educational opportunities, andhis later apprenticeship to Israel Stratton to acquire the trade of atailor. Here he remained for some years, but eventually engaged inmercantile pursuits, and in connection with his partner supplied abranch of the American army with provisions during the war of 1812.Later he embarked in the drug business, and while thus employed hadhis attention directed to the study of medicine. He graduated from theJefferson Medical College at Philadelphia the year of itsincorporation, and chose Mauricetown, Cumberland Co., as his first andonly field of labor. Here for a period of forty years he continued inactive practice, his useful career as a practitioner having ended withhis death in August, 1864, in his seventy-fourth year.
Dr. Butcher was thoroughly versed in the science he had espoused, andspeedily found that his abilities brought not only reputation, butsuccess. For a long period he controlled the practice of the vicinity, while his steady hand and mature judgement were not less frequentlysought during the later years of his life. The doctor during hisprofessional career gave much attention to business pursuits, and foryears engaged in farming occupations. He manifeated a keen interest inpolitical events of the day, and invariably espoused the principles ofthe Democracy. He was, in 1842, elected to the State Legislature, having been the only representative of his party chosen to theposition for a long series of years. He also for successive terms heldthe office of freeholder, and filled other positions of minorconsequence. His thorough knowledge of general law and excellentjudgement made his opinion often sought in the settlement of estatesas in other matters, and won for him the reputation of a safe and wisecounselor. He was an active Odd-Fellow, and a member of the ArielLodge, No. 56, of I.O.O.F., of Mauricetown. He was in religioneducated in the Quaker faith, but later affiliated with theMethodists. Joseph was a graduate of the Jefferson Medical College in1858, and for twenty years continued his professional labors atDividing Creek, Cumberland Co., subsequently removing to Mauricetown, where he is still active as a practitioner. "Sarah and Thomas H. Willingham had one child, a son named Thomas, born December 23, 1798, Santee, South Carolina. When he was only threemonths old his father died, and the widow, Sarah Willingham, marriedElias Gabriel Jaudon (1772-1826) on November 14, 1799, they had tenchilden. My mother often told me how devoted to him was ThomasWillingham's old colored mammy; when she died her last words were,"God bless MarseTommy." I imagine his colored mammy had much to dowith his rearing as his young mother married for the second time whileshe was still in her teens and he less than a year old. His nurse'sprayers were answered, for God blessed him greatly. On November 13,1823. Thomas married Phoebe Sarah Lawton. He moved to Savannah, wherehe was a cotton merchant, but his health became impaired and on theadvice of his physician he located in the country. He had plantationsfrom the rice fields of South Carolina to the sea island cotton landsof South Georgia. All of his plantations were well improved, hospitalsprovided for the sick, and everything conducted in the most orderlyand methodical manner. He was a kind master to his slaves; there wasan attachment existing between master and mistress and their slaveswhich one who had never borne such a relationship could everunderstand. Thomas Willingham built his home, a lovely oId house atLena, South Carolina, long before the War Between the States, whichwas burned by Sherman's army in 1864; he rebuilt it but that house wasalso burned bv fire caused by a defective flue in 1930. His grandson,Thomas Oregon Lawton. who was my father's first cousin, writes me in1941, "All evidence of Grandfather's handiwork has gone except the oldhewn timber barn on one side of which a hole was cut through whichWheeler's cavalrymen loaded corn as they passed through, ahead of, orbehind Sherman's army." Thomas Willingham died Julv 7, 1873, atAllendale and is buried in the old Lawtonville Baptist Churchcemetery. He was a deacon in this church for over fifty years. In hishome no day was ever begun without the family gathering for prayer atwhich a chapter in the Bible was read, a custom which was kept up bymany of his descendants. He had seven sons, five of whom fought forthe Confederacy, and four daughters. His second son, Benjamin LawtonWillingham, my grandfather, was born at Beaufort, South Carolina, onApril 21, 1829. and died at Macon, Georgia, February 17, 1898. He waseducated at The Citadel, Charleston, later spent one year at MadisonCollege, now Colgate University. While attending The Citadel he metElizabeth Baynard"

W. A. Lawton, 2600 Tangerine Avenue, a resident of St. Petersburg,Fla., for nearly five years, received word Tuesday that his ancestralhome at Lena, SC., had been destroyed by fire, caused by a defectiveflue. It was the irony of fate that this old house , erected longbefore the Civil War, in 1828, and occupied by four generations of thesame family, should become the victim of flames, inasmuch as it wasone of the houses in that section of South Carolina that escaped thetorch of Sherman and his men on their march to the sea so many yearsago. In telling about it yesterday, Mr. Lawton said a sister of hisgrandmother (Phoebe Sarah Lawton Willingham) was the only person athome when Sherman's army came marching through. She was ordered outthat the torch might be applied. She refused to leave and said that ifthey burned the house they must burn her too.
The house was fired but the woman refused to leave and the officer incommand ordered the fire extinguished. Again it was fired only to beput out when the woman refused to leave the house. The third time thesoldiers set fire to the building when they left. The woman hurriedout as soon as they were gone and put the fire out, saving thebuilding. The other residence which escaped was in a secluded valleyand was not seen by Sherman's men.
