Born in Hayleyville, Ezra went to school until the age of sixteen. Hewas in algebra class and was arguing with the teacher about thesolution to a math problem. Ezra was so sure that hew was right thathe picked up his books and left school, taught himself at home andeventually went to medical school. Worked in foundry in Bridgeton at18 and then read medicine with Dr. Enoch Fithian in Greenwich, NJ.Went to Maryland Medical School, returned to Greenwich to take overpractice of Dr. Fithian. (Dr. Fithian lived to over 100 years of ageand was much beloved by the people of Greenwich. There is an exhibitin his honor in the Historical Society of Greenwich.) He then movedto Roadstown and purchased an old inn where they lived. For two yearshe practiced medicine in Roadstown, then moved to 504 Broadway,Camden, NJ. later Mullica Hill farm

After graduating from Boston Normal School, he worked in his father'sjewelery store. After a short time he decided to become an Episcopalminister, much against his father's wishes, who refused to give himany financial aid. He worked his way through Andover Academy andWilliams College, taking care of horses, tending furnaces, andteaching art. He graduated from Williams in 1886 and later fromEpsicopal Theological Seminary in Cambridge, Mass. He served inWaltham as a curate, then became rector of Saint Barnabas Church inFalmouth, Mass., then rector of Saint Peter's Church in Cambridge. Heretired from the ministry in 1905. Being a talented artist and amateurphotographer, he became a skilled portrait photographer in Fitchburg,Mass. Finally, he retired to spend the rest of his life at his summerhome in Acworth, NH, where he died in 1947. His wife, Bessie, died in1964. Both are buried in Acworth.

We have the Cross of Honor which was given to her father for hisservice as Col of the 32nd Georgia Regiment in the Civil War. Hecommanded a battalion of 8 thousand men at Rivers Bridge, S.C. wherehis horse was shot out from under him!
