General Notes: From an article for the Travelers Club by Ginny Boynton:

Frank Masland lived a life that was full by anyone's standards. Hewas born in Philadelphia in 1895, came to Dickinson College in 1914and interrupted his schooling to serve as a sub-chaser commander inWorld War I. Following marriage in 1918 to Virginia Sharp, he and hisgrandfather's company, C.H. Masland & Sons, moved to Carlisle andbegan a 67 year association with Carlisle that ended upon the carpetcompany's purchase by Burlington Industries in 1986. Despitehardships for the carpet industry during the depression, the Maslandskept the company going and during World War II the factory was awardedfour Army-Navy "E" awards for service to the war effort. FE had alwaysloved the outdoors, probably stemming from his summers at a camp inMaine, but it wasn't until his sons traveled west and made him promiseto visit the Grand Canyon that he fell in love with the southwest andadventure travel. He was among the first people to raft the ColoradoRiver, helped lay out the boundaries for Canyonlands National Park andEverglades National Park, made trips to the Galapagos, Darien and SanBlas Islands and took numerous horseback trips into the Arches andCanyonlands areas. He may have been a manufacturer, but theprotection of the environment came higher on his list, and he workedformally with at least six Secretaries of the Interior to make certainthat natural areas would be available for posterity. Through hisconservation work, adventure travel and trips overseas on behalf ofthe US government and the Methodist Committee for Overseas Relief, hecame in contact with many interesting personalities of the 20thCentury including Lady Bird Johnson, Chiang Kai Shek and MadameChiang Kai Shek, Haile Selassie and Barry Goldwater. FE didn't neglecthis home area in central Pennsylvania, however. He was instrumentalin turning Kings Gap and the Children's Lake in Boiling Springs overto state control. He helped arrange financing to create ThornwaldPark. He was involved in the creation of the Carlisle Industrial Pooland the rebuilding of Allison Methodist Church after the buildingburned in 1954. In many ways, he changed the landscape we live in.Throughout FE's life and especially during his later years, hecorresponded with anyone and everyone. He praised; he criticized; hesympathized and supported. He could be acerbic and loving, but he wasonly very rarely, if at all, dull. Those of us who care aboutCarlisle, and anyone who has a passion for the outdoors should begrateful for the life that FE led for it smoothed the way for many ofus who followed.
