COL. EDWIN H. BACON, JR., lumber business, Eastman, Ga., was bornAugust 28, 1839, in Liberty County, Ga.
Our subject was educated in Springfield, Savannah and Waithourville,Ga. Took degree of M. D. in Savannah Medical College, class of 1860,and practiced but a few months when the war opened. His first servicein the Confederate army was the taking of Fort Pulaski before theState seceded. He enlisted in the spring of L861, in a Company ofSavannah volunteer guards. This company was organized in 1802. Hebelonged to it two years before the war opened. Each year he won thehighest prize for being the best drilled man in the company. He servedthree months in the above company and then was made adjutant of theFifth Georgia State Troops, later made major of the Thirty-secondGeorgia Regiment Infantry. Early in 1863 was the first time he wasunder fire, on James Island, among the forts and batteries on theSouth Carolina coast. He was in Fort Wagoner on the night of July 18,1863, when that terrible assault was made. He was in command of theThirty-second Regiment in an engagement on John's Island when theenemy were driven off the island, all done before sunrise. hecommanded his regiment on the South Carolina side of the SavannahRiver and fought Sherman in front all the way through the Carolinas onup to Greensboro, N. C., where they surrendered. During this time hehad three severe battles, namely: River's Bridge, S. C., Avery'sBorough and Bentonville, N. C.
From a reliable source we extract the following: "Col. E. H. Bacon ofthe Thirty-second Georgia Regiment was ordered (by Gen. McLawa,Division Commander), with the Thirty-second and Forty-seventh GeorgiaRegiments, reinforced by 250 cavalry, in all about 1,250 persons, tocover a front of five miles along the Salkehatchie River, the nextpoint to make a stand after leaving the C. & S. R. R. A galling firewas kept up by the enemy all day. Federal forces were increasing andthe little band of C. A. S. forces were being thinned. Gen. McLawsordered Col. Bacon to retire his army but save the artillery. The sunhad gone down, the shades of night were fast gathering and the enemywere rapidly approaching. Col. Bacon ordered four rounds from theartillery and the same from the infantry to be fired just as rapidlyas possible. This done, the horses were attached to the artillerybefore the smoke had cleared away, and all retreated to the EdistoRiver with comparatively little loss."
At Bentonville, N. C., was a three days fight. Col. Bacon was incommand of the Thirty-second Georgia Regiment, and had a horse killedwhile riding him. It should have been mentioned that our subject waspromoted to lieutenant colonel, July, 1863, before he was twenty-fouryears of age, and served as colonel from that time until the close ofthe war, his colonel acting as brigadier general. During his servicein the army he was not wounded, but had a button shot off his hat, andwas knocked down once by what was presumed to be a spent ball. The warclosing, lhe practiced medicine for a short time, tried the drug tradealso, then went into cotton planting, raising from 100 to 400 balesannually. This he continued for fifteen years with poor success in themain. In 1881 he began the saw-mill business, and in that has had avery flattering success. His marriage occurred July 28, 1869, whenMiss Sallie Willingham, daughter of Thomas H. and Cecelia (Bainard)Willingham, became his wife. The latter was a very influential andwealthy family from Allendale, S. C. The colonel's home has been madehappy in the birth of five children, namely: Telie L., now junior atMonroe Female College; Sallie W., Edwin R., Bessie (deceased), andNeila O. Both parents and the two elder children are members of theBaptist Church. The colonel is a Mason. He is also superintendent ofthe Baptist Church at Eastman, and has the enviable reputation ofbeing a first-class Sabbath school man.

Died in a train accident. She was trying to get her horse and buggyacross the tracks and was hit by the train.
From the Eastman, Georgia paper dated Thursday, August 16, 1917:
PROMINENT AND GREATLY BELOVED LADY OF EASTMAN IS INSTANTLY KILLED BYSOUTHERN FREIGHT TRAIN
"Mrs. E. H. Bacon, one of Eastman's most prominent and greatly belovedwomen, was instantly killed and her body horribly mangled at 11:45 onSaturday morning las by a local freight train No. 97, southbound, incharge of Conductor Dave Simpson and Engineer Burgess.
The accident occured at the railroad crossing just south of theSouthern depot, and in the heart of the business section of thecity. The engineer was switching cars, and had pulled down on theeastern side track for the switch to be turned so as to run a car backin on the side trackextending toward the W.&T. line. Mrs. Bacon, whowas driving a horse, evidently thought the train had pulled on downthe road, and was not expecting it to go back into the side trackconnecting with the W.&T. She therefore drove onto the track just intime to be struck by the rear car attached to the engine, which was acoal car. The buggy she occupied was completely demolished.
The negro brakeman, Millard Cullers, who was attending the switch, seeing the danger that threatened Mrs. Bacon, ran to the rear of thetrain, threw on the air brakes, and grabbed the rear wheels of Mrs.Bacon's buggy, making a desperate effort to throw it around and clearthe track, but was unable to accomplish his purpose. His arm andshoulder were struck by the car and were badly bruised. The desperateeffort of this negro to save Mrs. Bacon's life, in which he reallyrisked his own, is a worthy act that has been the subject of thehighest praise.
Mrs. Bacon was the widow of the late Dr. E. H. Bacon, who was for manyyears a prominent citizen of Eastman. She was born in Allendale, SC in1849 and was 68 years old at the time of her death. She was a daughterof Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Willingham. Soon after the Civil War herparents moved to Albany, Georgia, and it was wile a resident therethat Mrs. Bacon attended Monroe Female College, now Bessie TiftCollege, named for Mrs. Bacon's sister, from which she graduated withfirst honors. In 1881 she and her husband moved to Eastman, sincewhich time she has resided here.
